Description

The Xiaomi BW500 is a battery outdoor camera, and that one word changes everything about how you should judge it. There is no cable to run, no socket to find and no electrician to call. You screw it to a wall, charge it every few months, and that is the installation finished. Xiaomi rates it at 2560 x 1440, which is 2.5K rather than the 2K some listings claim, and the body is IP67 rated for a UAE summer. We stock the Xiaomi BW500 locally with a one-year Totot warranty.

Xiaomi BW500 2.5K battery powered outdoor security camera with IP67 rating

The battery is the whole point of the Xiaomi BW500

Xiaomi fits a 10,000mAh battery and quotes up to six months of operation. Read the condition attached to that number, because Xiaomi publishes it openly: the six-month figure assumes a maximum of twenty ten-second recordings per day. That is a quiet side gate or a back wall, not a busy front door on a family villa.

If your camera watches a driveway where people come and go all day, expect a real-world figure closer to weeks than months. That is not Xiaomi being dishonest; every battery camera is quoted this way, and the honest thing is to tell you what the assumption is instead of repeating six months as if it were guaranteed.

Xiaomi also sells an optional 5W solar panel separately. If the camera sits anywhere that catches direct sun, that panel turns a recharge every few months into no recharging at all. It is not included with this product and we do not ship it with the camera, so treat it as a separate purchase.

Xiaomi BW500 image quality at 2.5K and the 136 degree view

The Xiaomi BW500 records at 2560 x 1440 through an f/1.6 lens with a 136 degree field of view. The wide aperture matters more outdoors than it does indoors, because dusk and dawn are when most useful footage happens and a narrow aperture turns those hours into noise.

136 degrees covers a driveway, a garden or a shop frontage from one mounting point. As with any wide lens, distances at the far edges of the frame read shorter than they are, so judge coverage from the centre when you pick the spot.

One correction worth stating plainly: several listings describe the Xiaomi BW500 as 2K. Xiaomi publishes 2560 x 1440, which the company itself calls 2.5K. We changed our own title after checking, because a spec sheet is the only thing worth quoting.

Night vision on the Xiaomi BW500: two modes, not one

There are two night modes here and they behave very differently. Infrared gives you a black-and-white image with nothing visible to anyone standing in front of the camera. Full-colour night vision switches on a white light and gives you a colour picture out to a rated 10 metres.

Colour at night is genuinely useful outdoors, because the colour of a car or a jacket is often the only detail that matters afterwards. The cost is that the white light is visible. It announces the camera, which deters some people and annoys others, especially if it faces a neighbour’s window. Decide which of the two you actually want before you mount it, because the placement follows from that choice.

Ten metres is the rated colour range. Beyond that the white light falls off and you are back to infrared. For a villa gate or a parking bay that is enough; for a long boundary wall it is not.

AI detection, the siren and two-way audio

Xiaomi puts a 1.2T computing chip in the Xiaomi BW500 and uses it to separate people, vehicles, animals and packages from everything else that moves. Outdoors that distinction is the difference between a camera you keep and a camera you mute: without it, a palm frond in the wind and a cat on a wall both become notifications at three in the morning.

Package detection is the one people underrate. If you order anything to a villa, an alert that says a package arrived, rather than that something moved, is worth more than any resolution figure on the box.

The Xiaomi BW500 can respond as well as watch. Xiaomi publishes an audio-visual deterrent that combines an alarm sound with the white light and a push notification, so somebody in the wrong place gets a reaction rather than just being recorded.

Two-way audio has noise cancellation and what Xiaomi describes as human voice enhancement, picking up speech from up to 7 metres away. Outdoors, wind and traffic are the enemy of every camera microphone, so treat 7 metres as a best case on a calm evening rather than a promise.

Storage on the Xiaomi BW500 works differently, and you should know how

The Xiaomi BW500 does not use a microSD card. Xiaomi builds in 8GB of eMMC storage and quotes around 40 days of playback from it. That is a deliberate design choice for an outdoor camera: a card slot is a hole in a weatherproof body, and a card is the first thing a thief removes.

The practical consequences are worth spelling out. You cannot expand the storage, so 8GB is what you have for the life of the camera. And you cannot pull a card out and read the footage on a laptop; everything comes out through the Xiaomi Home app or through cloud sync.

Cloud sync is offered as a separate Xiaomi service on Xiaomi’s own terms. We do not resell it and it is not part of this price. If long retention matters to you, factor that in before ordering rather than after.

Who the Xiaomi BW500 is not for

Not for anyone on a 5 GHz-only network. Xiaomi lists 802.11 b/g/n/ax on 2.4 GHz. It is a Wi-Fi 6 camera, but on the 2.4 GHz band only, so your router must broadcast 2.4 GHz. Outdoors this is the right choice, because 2.4 GHz reaches through walls to a garden where 5 GHz would not, but it has to be enabled.

Not for a busy entrance if you want to forget about it. The six-month battery figure assumes light use. A front door that sees constant traffic will need recharging far more often, or the optional solar panel.

Not for anyone who needs to swap memory cards. There is no card slot at all, only 8GB of built-in storage and cloud sync.

Not for long-distance detail. At 136 degrees and 2.5K, it will tell you a person in dark clothing walked up the drive. It will not read a number plate at the end of the street.

And not for indoor pan-and-tilt use. This is a fixed outdoor unit; the Xiaomi C701 is the model that turns.

Buying the Xiaomi BW500 in the UAE heat

The IP67 rating and a -20C to 55C operating range are the two numbers that matter most for this country. 55C covers a wall in direct summer sun, and IP67 covers dust as well as rain, which in the Emirates is the more relevant half of that rating.

We ship across the Emirates including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman from locally held stock, so delivery is measured in days. Warranty is one year from Totot against manufacturing defects. This product title carries no TDRA registration, so no separate agent warranty applies, and we would rather say that clearly than let you assume coverage that does not exist. Our 14-day return policy covers defective or non-conforming items.

FAQ

Is the Xiaomi BW500 2K or 2.5K?

2.5K. Xiaomi publishes 2560 x 1440 and calls it 2.5K. Listings that say 2K are wrong, and we corrected our own title after checking the specification page.

Does the Xiaomi BW500 take a microSD card?

No. There is no card slot at all. It has 8 GB of built-in eMMC storage, which Xiaomi rates at around 40 days of playback, plus optional cloud sync.

Will the battery really last six months?

Only under light use. Xiaomi states the six-month figure assumes a maximum of twenty 10-second recordings per day. On a busy driveway expect weeks, not months, or add the optional solar panel.

Is a solar panel included?

No. Xiaomi sells a 5 W solar panel separately and it does not ship with this camera.

Can it survive a UAE summer outdoors?

Yes. Xiaomi rates it IP67 and gives an operating range of -20 C to 55 C, so direct sun on a wall and dust are both within specification.

Does it work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Xiaomi lists 802.11 b/g/n/ax on 2.4 GHz only. It is Wi-Fi 6, but on the 2.4 GHz band, so 2.4 GHz has to be enabled on your router.

Does night vision show colour?

Yes, up to 10 metres, using a white light. There is also a black-and-white infrared mode that stays invisible. You choose which one runs.

Does it rotate or follow movement?

No. It is a fixed camera. Xiaomi publishes no pan or tilt for this model.

Does it have an alarm?

Yes. Xiaomi publishes an audio-visual deterrent that sounds an alarm, turns on the white light and sends you a warning notification.

What is in the box?

The camera, a bracket, a charging cable, a mounting template sticker, four expansion bolts, four screws, a warning tag and the user manual. No solar panel and no memory card, because the camera has no card slot.
