The GoPro HERO12 Black records 5.3K video at 60 frames per second and 4K at 120 from a 1/1.9-inch sensor with an 8:7 aspect ratio, so one clip can become a vertical Reel or a wide YouTube shot. It takes 27MP photos, stabilises with HyperSmooth 6.0, records HDR video, and goes underwater to 10 m with no housing. GoPro lists the weight at 154 g with the battery and mounting fingers, and the box includes the camera, an Enduro battery and basic mounting hardware.
Table of Contents
5.3K, 4K and slow motion
GoPro lists 5.3K at up to 60 fps in 16:9 and up to 30 fps in the full 8:7 frame, 4K at up to 120 fps in 16:9 and 60 fps in 8:7, 2.7K at up to 240 fps, and 1080p at up to 240 fps. Video is H.265 at up to 120 Mbps, in 10-bit at 4K and above. The GoPro HERO12 Black also records HDR video in 5.3K30 (16:9), 4K30 (8:7) and 4K60 (16:9), which keeps bright sky and dark shade in the same shot, useful under strong UAE sun. Vertical 9:16 recording is available at 4K60 and 1080p60.
The 8:7 sensor and 27MP photos
The sensor is a 1/1.9-inch CMOS with 27.6MP active pixels, behind an f/2.5 lens with a 156-degree field of view in 8:7. Photos come out at 27.13MP in JPG or RAW (.gpr), and frame grabs from 8:7 5.3K video reach 24.69MP. Shooting in 8:7 means you can choose the crop later in the Quik app instead of deciding before you press record, which is why the GoPro HERO12 Black works well for people who post the same trip to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
HyperSmooth 6.0 and horizon control
HyperSmooth 6.0 handles stabilisation in the camera, with AutoBoost adding more when the ride gets rough. Horizon Lock keeps the horizon level through a full 360-degree turn, but GoPro notes it is not available at 5.3K60, 4K120, 2.7K240 and 1080p240; in those modes the camera uses Horizon Leveling instead. For cycling, karting on a track or a camel ride in the desert, that means steady footage without a gimbal.
Battery, heat and the operating range
The removable 1720mAh Enduro battery gives over 2.5 hours of continuous recording at 1080p30 and over 1.5 hours at 5.3K30, according to GoPro, measured at 25 °C with Wide lens, wireless and HyperSmooth on and both screens on with a 1-minute screensaver. GoPro gives an operating range of −10 °C to 35 °C. That upper figure matters in the UAE: in summer, outdoor temperatures pass 35 °C, so keep the GoPro HERO12 Black in the shade or moving air, and expect the camera to stop recording to protect itself if it overheats.
Water, mounts and screens
The camera is waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) without a housing and to 60 m (196 ft) inside GoPro’s Protective Housing, sold separately. Built-in folding fingers take GoPro mounts, and a 1/4-20 thread fits a standard tripod. A 2.27-inch rear touch screen handles menus, and a 1.4-inch front colour screen helps you frame selfies and vlogs. Bluetooth audio supports AirPods, other earbuds and wireless microphones, and several HERO12 Black cameras can share timecode for multi-camera shoots.
Who This Is Not For
The GoPro HERO12 Black is not for people who want GPS speed and altitude overlays: GoPro does not list GPS for this model, and the HERO13 Black adds it. It is not a low-light camera, and a recent phone will do better indoors at night. Its stated operating range tops out at 35 °C, below a UAE summer afternoon. Diving deeper than 10 m needs the Protective Housing, and a microSD card rated V30 or UHS-3 is required but not included.
