Racetrack woofer and 20-degree tilt
Beats built this generation around a bespoke racetrack woofer that, according to Apple, moves 90% more air than the earlier Beats Pill+, driven by upgraded neodymium magnets with 28% greater motor force. A redesigned tweeter sits in its own housing to reduce distortion, and the driver array is angled 20 degrees upward so the sound is aimed towards your head rather than at the table. Apple does not publish a wattage or frequency-response figure for the Beats Pill, so there is no number to compare with other speakers; it is tuned to sound fuller than its size on a desk, a kitchen counter or a picnic blanket, not to fill a large hall.
Up to 24 hours, Fast Fuel and Charge Out
Apple rates the Beats Pill at up to 24 hours of listening on one charge. That figure comes from Apple’s April 2024 testing with preproduction units and a 358-track playlist at 50% volume; louder listening shortens it. When the battery runs low, Beats states that Fast Fuel gives up to 2 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge. Charging uses USB-C, and a USB-C to USB-C cable is in the box, but the power adapter is sold separately. The same port also works in reverse: connect your phone with a USB-C cable and the speaker charges it from its own battery.
Lossless audio over USB-C and Class 1 Bluetooth
Plug the Beats Pill into a Mac, PC or other compatible device with a USB-C to USB-C cable and it plays high-resolution lossless audio, skipping Bluetooth compression completely. Over Bluetooth, the Beats Pill uses Class 1 Bluetooth on version 5.3 for a longer, steadier connection than typical Class 2 accessories. It also works as a speakerphone for calls and can bring up your phone’s voice assistant. On Android, Apple notes that Google Play Services must be enabled for the companion features.
Amplify and Stereo modes
With two Beats Pill speakers, Amplify Mode plays the same audio through both for a bigger sound, while Stereo Mode splits the audio into dedicated left and right channels, which suits films on a laptop or music in a larger room. The second speaker can be any colour, so a Matte Black unit pairs just as well with a Statement Red or Champagne Gold one.
Why Matte Black
Matte Black is the neutral choice in the range. It sits beside a TV, a laptop or gym gear without drawing attention, and a dark matte finish hides everyday marks better than a light one. If the speaker is going to travel in a bag, to the gym or to the beach, black is the colour least likely to look worn after a few months. The removable lanyard and soft-grip silicone backing are the same on every colour, so you can hang it from a bag strap or a tent pole, or rest it on its back.
IP67 and everyday use
The Beats Pill is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance under IEC 60529, so sand and pool splashes are within its rating; Apple notes that resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear. Dry it before charging, and rinse off salt water or chlorine after a day at the beach or the pool. The controls are simple: a centre button for music and calls, volume up and down, and a system button for power, pairing and the voice assistant. At 680 g and 21.9 x 7.0 x 7.1 cm, it fits in the side pocket of a backpack.
Who This Is Not For
If you want a wired 3.5 mm input for an older player or a TV, Apple lists none for the Beats Pill; the only wired connection is USB-C. Apple also does not list a user-adjustable EQ, so the sound is used as Beats tuned it. It is not a party speaker for a large garden either: one Beats Pill is sized for a room or a small group, and Apple publishes no power rating. Anyone who wants a light show, a microphone input or a much louder speaker should look at a larger party model.
