The Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB is Samsung’s pocket-sized external solid-state drive, here in Titan Gray, model MU-PC1T0T/WW. Samsung rates it at up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2, wraps it in an 85 x 57 x 8.0 mm aluminium body weighing 58 g, and adds AES 256-bit hardware encryption with optional password protection. Both a USB Type-C to C and a USB Type-C to A cable come in the box, so it plugs into new laptops and older PCs alike.

Speeds and the conditions behind them
Samsung quotes sequential read of up to 1,050 MB/s and sequential write of up to 1,000 MB/s for the Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB. Those figures need three things: a host port that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), a cable that supports it too, and UASP mode enabled. Samsung adds that performance may vary with host configuration. The drive is backward compatible with USB 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0, so it still works on an older port, only slower; on USB 2.0 the drive is limited by the port, not the SSD. Samsung does not publish sustained write speed for very large transfers or a TBW endurance figure on its product page.

Size, weight and the Titan Gray finish
At 85 x 57 x 8.0 mm, the Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB is close to a bank card in footprint and slips into a shirt pocket or the small sleeve of a laptop bag. The drive weighs 58 g. The body is aluminium in Titan Gray, a neutral dark metallic shade that sits well next to a silver or space-grey laptop and does not show light scratches as clearly as a bright colour would. Samsung also sells the T7 in Indigo Blue and Metallic Red, with identical specifications.

Drop resistance and heat control
Samsung says the Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB protects data from falls of up to 2 metres, based on an internal free-fall shock test under controlled conditions. There are no moving parts, which is why a knock that might damage a mechanical hard drive is less of a risk here. That is not water or dust protection: the T7 carries no IP rating, and Samsung sells the rubber-clad T7 Shield for that. For heat, Samsung states the T7 keeps its skin temperature below 51 °C at all times in controlled conditions, so it can feel warm after a long copy but is designed to stay within that limit.

Encryption, password and Samsung Magician
The Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB uses AES 256-bit hardware encryption, and you can turn on password protection through Samsung Magician, which is available for Windows, macOS and Android. Magician also shows drive health and installs firmware updates, which need an internet connection. Minimum requirements are Windows 10, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or Android 5.1. Keep the password somewhere safe: a forgotten password on a hardware-encrypted drive means you cannot reach the data on it.

Compatibility with PCs, Macs, phones and consoles
Samsung lists Windows and macOS computers, smartphones, tablets and game consoles as compatible hosts, and notes that compatibility may vary and some operating systems may require the T7 to be reformatted. In practice the Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB connects over its USB Type-C port with either of the two included cables: Type-C to C for current laptops, tablets and phones, Type-C to A for older desktops and consoles. Capacity follows Samsung’s decimal definition, 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, so a computer that counts in binary units will show less free space.

Who This Is Not For
The Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB is not built for rain, sand or the pool deck: it has no IP rating, and the T7 Shield is Samsung’s rugged model. The Samsung SSD T7 Portable 1TB is also wasted on a computer with only USB 2.0 ports, where the port caps speed far below the drive. Anyone who needs Thunderbolt-class speed for multi-stream 8K editing will find 10Gbps limiting. And if you need more than 1TB, Samsung sells 2TB and 4TB versions of the T7.
