Two transmitters, one receiver, and what is in the kit
RODE lists the full kit contents for the RODE Wireless PRO: two transmitters, one receiver, the Charge Case+, an accessory case, two Lavalier II lapel microphones, two MagClip GO magnetic clips, three furry windshields, an SC2 3.5mm TRS patch cable (20cm), an SC22 USB-C to USB-C cable (30cm) and an SC34 SuperSpeed USB-C cable. Each transmitter also has a built-in omnidirectional microphone, so you can clip it on as it is or plug a Lavalier II into its locking 3.5mm input. The MagClip GO holds a transmitter with a magnet through clothing, which keeps it steady on a shirt without clamping onto a collar.
32-bit float on-board recording on the RODE Wireless PRO
Each transmitter has 32GB of internal memory, which RODE rates at over 40 hours of 32-bit float recording per transmitter. That backup is recorded from the built-in microphone or from a mic plugged into the transmitter, independently of the wireless link. If the signal drops for a moment or the camera audio clips, the clean copy is still on the transmitter. RODE is clear about two conditions: 32-bit float applies only to the on-board recordings, not to the audio your camera records from the receiver, and GainAssist does not apply to on-board recordings. You choose Manual or Always recording mode in the RODE Central app, and export the WAV files by connecting the charge case to a computer with the SuperSpeed cable.
Timecode and syncing with cameras
The RODE Wireless PRO uses the SMPTE timecode standard with LTC encoding, and the receiver acts as the source. In the timecode output mode it can send timecode to cameras or recorders that accept it, or jam-sync several cameras to the same clock. RODE notes that jam-synced devices drift slightly over time because their internal clocks are not perfectly matched, and recommends repeating the jam sync about every four hours or whenever you power-cycle your cameras. Before you shoot, set the timecode frame rate to match the project; supported rates include 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 drop-frame, 29.97 and 30fps. For multi-camera interviews this replaces clapping and lining up waveforms by hand.
GainAssist, safety channel and routing modes
GainAssist is RODE’s automatic level control for the live output, smoothing loud and quiet passages when nobody is riding the levels. The receiver offers Merged mode, where both transmitters are summed into one output, and Split mode, where each transmitter goes to its own left or right channel for separate editing. Safety Channel mode adds a second copy of the audio 10dB lower than the main channel, so a sudden shout that clips the main track stays usable on the backup. RODE states that the safety channel is only available in Merged mode, with all inputs on the left channel and the safety copy on the right. The receiver also has a headphone output with level control, and a headset or lavalier connected to it can be captured as an extra source.
Range, battery and the Charge Case+ on the RODE Wireless PRO
Transmission uses RODE Series IV 2.4GHz digital with 128-bit encryption. RODE quotes up to 260m, measured line of sight; walls, people and a busy 2.4GHz environment all shorten it. Each unit runs on a built-in lithium-ion battery charged over USB-C, with up to 7 hours of operating time per charge according to RODE. The Charge Case+ holds a 4,200mAh battery, gives two complete charges of both transmitters and the receiver, and recharges in 2.5 hours from a 5V/3A USB-C supply. Transmitter and receiver each measure 46.5 x 44 x 20mm, weighing 35g and 36g; the case is 101 x 82 x 70mm and 177g. RODE also offers Direct Connect in the RODE Capture app, pairing a transmitter to an iPhone over Bluetooth without the receiver.
Who This Is Not For
The RODE Wireless PRO is not the right choice if you need XLR outputs straight into a mixer or a camera with XLR inputs: the receiver outputs on 3.5mm TRRS, so you will need an adapter cable. It is also more than a single presenter needs if you will never use the second transmitter. No Lightning cable is listed in the box, so older Lightning iPhones need a separate cable or adapter for a wired connection. And for long distances through crowded venues, a licensed UHF system is the stronger tool than any 2.4GHz kit, including this one.
