32-bit float backup recording and timecode
Each transmitter has 32 GB of built-in storage that records a copy of the audio, so a wireless dropout does not cost you the take. The system works on the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands with Bluetooth 5.4, and DJI rates the range at up to 400 m in open conditions with Lossless Audio off, or 80 m in high interference. One receiver can link with up to four transmitters, and one transmitter can connect to up to eight receivers, so the DJI Mic 3 Black can grow into a four-person panel or a multi-camera shoot. Transmitters also connect directly over Bluetooth or OsmoAudio to the Osmo 360, Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Pocket 3, with no receiver needed. The DJI Mic 3 Black capsules are omnidirectional with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz encoded, or 20 Hz to 24 kHz in lossless mode. DJI lists a signal-to-noise ratio of 72 dB, sensitivity of -36 dBV at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 126 dB at 1% THD. Noise cancelling has two levels, Basic and Strong, switched by double-pressing the transmitter power button. Adaptive gain offers Automatic mode to prevent clipping and Dynamic mode to balance volume between voices; it is off by default. Three voice tone presets adjust the character of the voice before you reach the editing stage.
Battery life and the charging case
DJI rates each DJI Mic 3 Black transmitter at 8 hours and the receiver at 10 hours, tested with noise cancelling and internal recording off at close range with no interference; turning those features on will shorten the time. Transmitters and the receiver recharge in about 50 minutes. The charging case holds a 1950 mAh battery, recharges in about 1.5 hours, and can fully charge both transmitters and the receiver about 2.4 times. It weighs 164.1 g and measures 106.3 × 42.5 × 59.2 mm. The receiver includes a headphone monitor output, so you can listen while recording.
Who This Is Not For
The DJI Mic 3 Black is not compatible with DJI Mic 2 transmitters or receivers, so owners of a Mic 2 kit cannot mix the units directly (pairing two different Mic products works only through supported OsmoAudio devices). The Lightning phone adapter is sold separately, which matters for older iPhones. Internal recording cannot use external storage, and the 8-hour transmitter figure applies with noise cancelling and internal recording off.
