MONARK Deluxe Edition is the boxed PlayStation 5 release of MONARK, a dark, story-driven RPG developed by FuRyu and published in Europe by NIS America. A deadly Mist has swallowed Shin Mikado Academy and is driving its students mad; to save your friends you enter the Otherworld, a realm of Daemons, and command Fiends powered by your own Ego. On top of the game, NIS America lists three extras in the MONARK Deluxe Edition: the MONARK Confessional mini art book, the VANI Limited Digital Soundtrack and a reverse coversheet. It is a PAL, PEGI 12, single-player game with English and Japanese voices and English text.

The story: an academy lost in the Mist
NIS America sets MONARK at Shin Mikado Academy, where a deadly Mist has spread through the buildings and anyone caught in it slides into madness. Your character crosses into the Otherworld, a dimension where Daemons live, to rescue friends who have been taken by it. Seven Pactbearers have made deals with those Daemons and are corrupting the school, and each one is a major fight. The tension NIS America builds the game around is simple: the more of your madness you accept, the more power you gain, but go too far and you lose yourself. It is a slow, dialogue-heavy story in the tradition of Japanese psychological RPGs rather than an action game.
Two worlds: exploring the Mist, fighting in the Otherworld
MONARK Deluxe Edition plays in two layers. In the real world you walk the halls of the academy, investigate what happened, talk to students and recruit allies while the Mist closes in. In the Otherworld the game switches to combat. NIS America calls this a descent into madness that alternates between exploring the Mist and fighting within the Otherworld. The split gives the game a rhythm: quieter investigation scenes, then tense battles against Daemons and the Pactbearers. The art direction is described by the publisher as a dark, surreal neo-fantasy style, with detailed character designs and unsettling locations.
The power of the Ego and your Fiends
Your strength in MONARK comes from your Ego. NIS America explains that psychological tests raise it, and that the Ego powers the Fiends who fight for you. You can customise the appearance and abilities of your Fiends and unlock new ones as the story moves on, so the team grows with your play style. Battles use what the publisher calls a freeform tactical battle system, where positioning and the choice of which Fiend acts matter more than reflexes. Players who enjoy building and tuning a party of companion creatures will find the most to do here.
What is inside the MONARK Deluxe Edition box
NIS America lists four items for the MONARK Deluxe Edition on PS5: the game itself on disc, the MONARK Confessional mini art book, the VANI Limited Digital Soundtrack and a reverse coversheet. The soundtrack is digital, so it is not a CD in the box. The reverse coversheet is a paper insert you can flip inside the case to show alternative artwork instead of the retail cover with rating logos. NIS America does not publish the page count of the art book, the number of soundtrack tracks or an average playtime, so none of those figures appear here.
Playing it on your PS5
This is a physical PS5 disc in PAL packaging, so it needs a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro ship without a disc drive; to play this copy on either one you need Sony’s separate disc drive attached. MONARK was also released on PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC, but this listing is the PS5 version only. NIS America gives the European release date as 25 February 2022, and the game is single-player with no local or online multiplayer mode.
Who This Is Not For
MONARK Deluxe Edition is not for players who need Arabic: the text is English only, and the game is built on long conversations. It is not for anyone looking for fast action or multiplayer, since it is a single-player tactical RPG with no co-op or split screen. The PEGI 12 rating and themes of madness and fear make it unsuitable for young children. And it will not play on a PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro without Sony’s separate disc drive.
