Ghost of Yotei PS5 opens with a girl pinned to a burning tree while her family is killed around her. Sixteen years later Atsu comes back to Ezo as a self-trained mercenary with six names to cross off. Sucker Punch set this one in 1603, at the dawn of the Edo period, roughly three hundred years after Ghost of Tsushima and with no connection to Jin Sakai beyond the title.

Atsu, the Onryo
The first game was about a man slowly abandoning his honour. This one skips that arc entirely. Atsu is already a killer when the game starts, already feared, already carrying the name Onryo — the vengeful ghost. What the story actually examines is whether revenge is what she wants, or whether what she is really chasing is peace.
Two timelines run in parallel, cutting between the massacre and the present, and the game uses that structure to explain her decisions rather than justify them. Critics have singled out Atsu as one of the strongest protagonists PlayStation has produced.
The Yotei Six
Six masked warriors, led by Lord Saito, murdered Atsu’s family and scattered across the province. The campaign gives you some freedom over which to pursue, but this is not a checklist you can attack in any order — the map opens in stages and Sucker Punch keeps deliberate control over pacing. Each of the six gets real screen time, and the writing is more interested in who they are than in what they symbolise.
Ezo, and an Open World That Trusts You
Ezo is modern Hokkaido, and the game stages itself under Mount Yotei with grasslands, forests, hot springs and shrines. The design philosophy carries over from Tsushima: the wind guides you instead of a minimap arrow, there are no damage numbers, and the interface gets out of the way. A loop of shrine climbs, fox dens, bounty contracts, enemy camps and Sumi-e painting sits alongside the main hunt, and almost none of it feels like filler.
Push Square called it the greatest Sucker Punch game ever made in its full PS5 review.
Ghost of Yotei PS5 Combat and Customisation
Combat is duel-focused and built around parry timing. Armour sets change how you fight rather than just how you look — one bounty reward disables ordinary parries but widens the perfect-parry and dodge windows, which is a genuine risk-reward trade rather than a stat bump. Weapon kits recolour and restyle blades, armour upgrades add visual detail, and charms let you assemble your own build, so two players rarely end up with the same Atsu.

Graphics Modes and the DualSense
Four display modes are available: Quality targeting 30 frames per second at higher resolution, Performance targeting 60, Ray Tracing for higher-quality lighting, and Ray Tracing Pro — exclusive to PS5 Pro — which targets 60 frames per second with ray-traced lighting. Fast travel across the entire map resolves in about a second.
The DualSense is used properly rather than decoratively: you knap flint against the touchpad to start a fire, slide a thumb across it to match notes on Atsu’s shamisen, and flick a finger to play Zeni Hajiki. The shamisen doubles as a narrative device and a large part of the soundtrack.

FAQ – Ghost of Yotei PS5
Do I need to play Ghost of Tsushima first?

No. It is a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
Do I need a PS5 Pro?
No. It runs on a standard PS5 with Quality, Performance and Ray Tracing modes. PS5 Pro owners get an additional Ray Tracing Pro mode.
Is there multiplayer?
The campaign is single-player. Ghost of Tsushima added a co-op mode after launch, but that is a separate game.
Is it suitable for younger players?
No. It is rated PEGI 18 and the violence is graphic and frequent.
