Why the Mi Electric Scooter Essential is light
Xiaomi gives the Essential a weight of 12 kg, with a frame made from what it calls a low-density, high-strength aerospace aluminium alloy. The trade-off is a smaller battery: 5,100 mAh at 36 V, or 183 Wh. That is what keeps it light enough to carry up a few stairs or lift into a car boot.
Folding the Mi Electric Scooter Essential takes about three seconds according to Xiaomi, and folded it stands 49 cm high. Xiaomi does not publish the full folded or unfolded dimensions on its specification page, so we do not list them; measure your boot or storage corner against the 49 cm height and the length of the deck.
Speed modes and the 20 km range
The Mi Electric Scooter Essential has three riding modes: pedestrian mode at up to 5 km/h, D (standard) mode at up to 15 km/h and S (sport) mode at up to 20 km/h. The 250W rated motor reaches 500W at maximum and handles slopes of up to 10%, according to Xiaomi.
Xiaomi quotes a range of up to 20 km, measured with a 75 kg rider at 30°C and 70% humidity, in wind no stronger than level 3, with tyres at 50 psi, on a level road at a constant speed below 15 km/h. Heavier riders, hills, sport mode, stop-start riding and heat all shorten it, so plan daily trips well inside 20 km. Recharging takes about 3.5 hours with the 71W charger Xiaomi specifies.
Brakes, tyres and lights
The Mi Electric Scooter Essential uses two brakes that work together: E-ABS on the front wheel and a disc brake on the rear wheel. Xiaomi says they act at the same time to shorten the braking distance. A KERS energy-recovery system also feeds a little energy back into the battery as you slow down.
Both wheels carry 8.5-inch pneumatic tyres, which Xiaomi says have improved puncture resistance. Air-filled tyres absorb bumps well on paving, but they still need their pressure checked and can still puncture. At the front is a 2W headlight with a range of about 10 metres, and there is an enlarged rear light plus reflectors on the front, sides and rear.
App, dashboard and water resistance
A dashboard on the stem shows your speed and riding information. Through the Mi Home app you can see riding statistics and battery status, install firmware updates and use the remote lock on your Mi Electric Scooter Essential.
The scooter is rated IP54, which covers dust protection and splashes of water from any direction. That is fine for a wet pavement or light drizzle, but it is not protection against heavy rain, deep puddles or washing with a hose.
Who This Is Not For
Xiaomi lists an operating temperature of -10°C to 40°C, and a UAE summer afternoon goes well past 40°C. If you need to ride at midday in July or August, this is not the right scooter; plan early-morning or evening rides and store it indoors, not in a hot car.
The Mi Electric Scooter Essential is also not for riders over 100 kg, shorter than 120 cm or taller than 200 cm, which are Xiaomi’s published limits, and Xiaomi’s recommended rider age is 16 to 50. With a 20 km rated range and a 20 km/h top speed, it suits short hops to the metro or around a campus, not long cross-city commutes.
