The HUAWEI FreeClip Black is Huawei’s first-generation open-ear earbud, built as a clip that wraps the rim of the ear instead of a plug that seals the canal. Each earbud weighs 5.6 g, the bridge is made of a nickel-titanium shape-memory alloy, and Huawei rates the battery at up to 8 hours per charge and 36 hours with the case. Black is the colour most buyers pick for work and commuting: it looks like a plain accessory next to a dark suit, glasses or a laptop bag, and it does not draw attention in meetings.

Why the HUAWEI FreeClip Black Suits Work and Commuting
Huawei sells the original FreeClip in four finishes: Rose Gold, Beige, Purple and Black. Sound, battery and features are identical across all four, so the choice comes down to how the earbud looks on you. The HUAWEI FreeClip Black is the quiet option. The Acoustic Ball in front of the ear and the Comfort Bean behind it read as a small dark shape, which is why it tends to be the pick for offices, client meetings and daily commuting on the metro or in the car.
Because nothing enters the ear canal, you keep hearing the room around you. A colleague can talk to you without you pulling anything out, an announcement at the station still gets through, and a doorbell at home is not missed. For people who spend eight or nine hours a day on calls and in shared spaces, the HUAWEI FreeClip Black is built for exactly that routine.
How the Clip Design Holds On
The FreeClip has three named parts. The Acoustic Ball carries the 10.8 mm dual-magnet driver and sits in front of the ear canal. The Comfort Bean rests behind the ear. The C-bridge joins them over the rim, and Huawei makes it from a high-performance Ni-Ti shape-memory alloy so it flexes to different ear thicknesses and returns to shape. Huawei says the shape was designed from data on more than 10,000 ears, and it warns against overstretching, squeezing or bending the bridge.
There is no left or right earbud to hunt for. The HUAWEI FreeClip Black detects which ear each unit is on and assigns the audio channels automatically; Huawei notes that accuracy can vary slightly with wearing angle, ear shape and posture. If you prefer the earbud lower on the ear, Huawei suggests wearing it in the standard position first and waiting about 10 seconds before adjusting.
Calls, Two Devices and Hands-Free Control
For calls, Huawei pairs a microphone system with a multi-channel deep neural network (DNN) algorithm and a VPU (voice pickup) sensor, so your voice is separated from background noise. Huawei says the processing adjusts automatically when ambient noise changes. The HUAWEI FreeClip Black can stay connected to two devices at once, such as a phone and a laptop, and Huawei lists phones, tablets, PCs and watches running iOS, Android or Windows.
Controls work by tapping the Acoustic Ball, the C-bridge or the Comfort Bean: double-tap to play or pause and to answer or end a call, triple-tap for the next track, and both can be customised in the HUAWEI AI Life app. Head gestures, a nod to answer and a shake to reject, arrived through an over-the-air update, so update the firmware after pairing. Huawei also describes a reverse sound wave system inside the Acoustic Ball that reduces how much of your audio leaks to people nearby, which matters on a quiet office floor.
Battery Life, Measured the Way Huawei Measures It
Huawei rates the HUAWEI FreeClip Black at up to 8 hours of music per charge and up to 36 hours with the charging case. Those figures come from Huawei’s lab test with AAC audio at 50% volume and default settings for other features; higher volume or long calls will shorten them. A 10-minute charge gives up to 3 hours of playback, which covers most commutes.
The earbuds take about 40 minutes to fill in the case. The case alone takes about 60 minutes on a USB-C cable or about 150 minutes on a wireless charger, where Huawei specifies roughly 2 W. Each HUAWEI FreeClip Black earbud has a battery of at least 55 mAh and the case at least 510 mAh. A USB-C cable is in the box; a wireless charging pad is not.
Wearing and Caring for the Black Finish
Black hides small scuffs and the grey marks that pockets and bags leave on lighter colours, which suits an earbud that goes in and out of a case many times a day. It does show dust and skin oil as a dull film, so wipe the HUAWEI FreeClip Black and the inside of the case with a dry microfibre cloth every few days, and keep the charging contacts clean so the earbuds charge reliably.
The earbuds carry an IP54 rating under IEC 60529, meaning protection against dust and splashes, but Huawei states the charging case is not waterproof. Dry the earbuds before putting them back after a sweaty walk or a rainy day, and do not rinse them under a tap.
Who This Is Not For
Anyone who wants noise cancellation should skip the HUAWEI FreeClip Black. The FreeClip has no ANC, and an open design cannot block a loud metro carriage or an aircraft cabin; in those places the music gets drowned out. Bass is lighter than on sealed in-ear earbuds, even with Huawei’s dynamic bass algorithm. Swimmers should look elsewhere, as IP54 covers splashes, not immersion, and the case has no water protection. Buyers who need a specific Bluetooth version for a car or older device should know Huawei does not list it on the FreeClip specifications page. Audio sharing between two pairs of HUAWEI earbuds only works on certain HUAWEI phones running EMUI 13 or later.

FAQ
Is the HUAWEI FreeClip Black good for office calls?
Yes. Huawei uses a DNN noise-reduction algorithm with a VPU sensor to separate your voice, and the open design lets you hear colleagues without removing the earbuds.
Can the HUAWEI FreeClip Black connect to a phone and a laptop at the same time?
Yes. It supports dual-device connection with phones, tablets, PCs and watches running iOS, Android or Windows.
How long does the battery last?
8 hours per charge and 36 hours with the case, per Huawei’s test with AAC at 50% volume.
Does it have noise cancellation?
No. The FreeClip is an open-ear design without ANC, so it does not block outside noise.
Is this the FreeClip 2?
No. This is the first-generation HUAWEI FreeClip; the FreeClip 2 and FreeClip 2 S are newer models.
Is the charging case waterproof?
No. Only the earbuds are rated IP54; Huawei states the case is not waterproof.
