The DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black Limited Edition is Sony’s official controller for Ghost of Yōtei, described by PlayStation as having “a dramatic black brushed design inspired by the game”. The artwork draws on sumi-e, the Japanese tradition of painting in black ink, and the touch pad carries a silhouette of Atsu, the game’s protagonist. Inside is a complete DualSense wireless controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. It went on sale on October 2, 2025, in limited quantities.

Sumi-e Brushwork on the DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black
Sony’s PlayStation Blog explains the idea behind the Black design: it draws on sumi-e, the use of black ink in painting, and expresses the landmarks of Ezo through bold black brush strokes. Sony says the design is meant to capture the beauty and mystery of the land while echoing Atsu’s inner struggle and journey towards redemption.
On the controller, that means black brushwork across the shell rather than a solid black body; the product photographs show the strokes over a light base. The touch pad carries a striking silhouette of Atsu, and Sony adds a special maker’s seal engraved with PlayStation shapes to the controller. The DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black is the controller supplied with the Ghost of Yōtei Black Limited Edition PS5 bundle, also sold on its own.
Black or Gold: Two Designs from the Same Collection
Sony released two Ghost of Yōtei controllers at the same time and at the same launch price. The Gold Limited Edition takes its inspiration from kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing ceramics with gold lacquer, while the Black Limited Edition uses sumi-e ink painting. Both carry Atsu on the touch pad and the engraved maker’s seal, and both are full DualSense controllers underneath.
The choice is therefore about taste and setup. The DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black suits players who like monochrome artwork and quieter desk colours, and it matches the Black Limited Edition console. Anyone pairing a controller with the gold console covers will want the Gold design instead, which we list separately.
Full DualSense Hardware Underneath
The artwork changes nothing inside the DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black. Sony’s PlayStation Direct listing names haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone for online chat, a touch pad, a motion sensor, a built-in rechargeable battery and a USB-C port, and gives the model number CFI-ZCT1W. Haptics come from dual actuators rather than rumble motors, and the L2 and R2 triggers change resistance when a game asks them to.
Sony lists compatibility with the PS5 console, PC, Mac and mobile devices. It also notes that haptic feedback and adaptive triggers require a USB connection and game support, so on a computer the full effect needs a cable and a game that uses it.
Release, Price and Where Sony Sold It
Sony revealed the Ghost of Yōtei Limited Edition hardware on July 10, 2025, opened pre-orders on September 4 and released the consoles and accessories on October 2, 2025, in limited quantities. The Black controller launched at $84.99, €84.99, £74.99 or ¥12,480.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the standalone Black controller was available at direct.playstation.com and at select retailers in Japan. Sony has not published a production number for the DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black.
Who This Is Not For
If you want a controller that looks entirely black, this is not it: the name refers to the black ink artwork, and the photographs show a light shell under the brushwork, which also shows dust and hand marks sooner than a dark finish. A dry microfibre cloth keeps it clean; avoid solvents on printed artwork.
The box contains the controller and a user manual only, with no USB cable, and Sony does not publish battery life in hours. Players who want back buttons or swappable sticks need the DualSense Edge instead, since the DualSense Ghost of Yotei Black keeps the standard layout.
