Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection for PS5 – Classic Bubsy Games with Rewind and Save States, 1 Player

Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection is a playable history of Bubsy the bobcat, the platform mascot of the 1990s, published on PlayStation 5 by Atari and built by Limited Run Games on its Carbon Engine. It gathers the original 2D games, the Atari Jaguar entry and the PlayStation-era Bubsy 3D in one physical PS5 edition, and adds save states, rewind, archive material and developer interviews. It is a one-player game, and this page sets out exactly what is inside before you buy.

What is inside Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection

Atari lists the following games. Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind comes in its Super Nintendo and Mega Drive/Genesis versions, together with Yamaneko Bubsy no Daibouken, the Japanese Super Famicom release. Bubsy II is included in its Super Nintendo, Genesis and Game Boy versions. Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales comes from the Atari Jaguar, and Bubsy 3D: Furbitten Planet comes from the original PlayStation.

Atari also lists Bubsy 3D ReFurBished next to the original 3D game. Limited Run Games describes the package as four games with archival extras, so the headline number depends on whether you count each console version separately. Either way, Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection puts the classic Bubsy platformers and their regional and handheld versions on one PS5 disc, which is the point of buying it.

Rewind, save states and higher resolution

Limited Run Games states that every game in Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection runs with enhanced resolution and frame rate, and that each one has save states and rewind. Platformers of this age were built around limited lives and trial and error, so being able to save at any moment, or roll back a few seconds after a bad jump, makes them far easier to finish for a player meeting them for the first time.

You do not have to use these tools. If you want the original challenge, simply play without them. The option to switch between the two ways of playing is what makes a retro collection like this work for both a returning fan and a newcomer.

A museum of the Bubsy series

Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection is not only the games. Atari calls it a playable history that includes games, artifacts and interviews, and Limited Run Games lists scanned archival materials, development interviews and an in-game music player. This is where Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection differs from simply owning old cartridges: you get the story of how the character was designed, marketed and received, told through the material the studios kept.

For anyone interested in how 1990s mascot platformers were made, that archive is a large part of the value. The music player is a small touch, but the Bubsy soundtracks are part of what people remember.

The physical PS5 edition, region and rating

This listing is the physical PlayStation 5 edition of Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection. Atari sells the standard physical edition with the game and a booklet. The Deluxe and Im-PAW-sible collector editions, with posters, soundtrack CDs, keychains and a figure, were separate products and are not what this listing contains.

Limited Run Games lists this physical release of Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection as region-free, so a disc bought in another region plays on a UAE PS5. The collection is rated ESRB E for Everyone with the descriptor Mild Fantasy Violence. Because it is a disc, it needs a PS5 with a disc drive: the standard model, or a Digital Edition with the separate disc drive attached.

One player, no online modes

Limited Run Games lists Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection as a 1-player game. Neither Atari nor Limited Run describes local co-op, versus play or any online features, so plan on it as a solo game. Progress is personal: you, the save states and the archive.

Who this is not for

If you want Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection to be a modern platformer with new levels and modern controls, this is not it. The classic games are presented as they were, with rewind, save states and higher resolution added on top, not rebuilt from scratch. The only reworked entry Atari lists is Bubsy 3D ReFurBished.

It is also the wrong choice for a family looking for a game to play together on the sofa, because it supports one player. And if your console is a PS5 Digital Edition without the add-on disc drive, a physical copy will not run.

Finally, Bubsy 3D is an early 3D game from the first PlayStation, and its camera and controls show their age. Collectors will value it for what it is; players expecting modern 3D movement may be disappointed.
