Clickpad and circular scrubbing
The top of the Siri Remote 3rd Generation is a touch-enabled clickpad. You press its edges to move up, down, left and right, press the centre to select, and swipe across it to fly through long rows of titles. The outer ring also accepts a circular gesture: run your finger around it, the way you would turn a jog dial, to move forward or back through a film or episode. Below the clickpad sit the Back, TV/Control Centre, play/pause, volume and mute buttons, all physical, so you can find them by touch in a dark room.
USB-C charging and battery life
The Siri Remote 3rd Generation has a rechargeable battery and a USB-C port on the bottom edge. Apple says a single charge lasts months with typical daily use, but it does not publish a battery capacity or an exact number of weeks, so treat months as an estimate that depends on how much you use it. You charge it from a computer or a USB-C power adapter, which Apple notes are sold separately. In practice, the cable you already use for a recent iPhone, iPad or MacBook will do the job.
Controlling the TV and sound system
Apple fits the Siri Remote 3rd Generation with both Bluetooth 5.0 and an infrared transmitter. Bluetooth talks to the Apple TV, while IR or HDMI-CEC lets the same remote switch the TV or receiver on and off, change the input to Apple TV, and control volume and mute. For CEC to work, the feature has to be enabled on the TV, where brands give it their own names such as Anynet+, Bravia Sync or SIMPLINK. Most living rooms end up needing just this one remote for everyday viewing.
Siri and voice search
The Siri button sits on the right-hand side of the Siri Remote 3rd Generation. Hold it and speak to search for a film, an actor or an app, or to ask Apple TV to open something. The languages and features available depend on how Siri is set up on your Apple TV and on your region, so voice search does not behave identically in every country. The remote still controls everything by hand if you prefer not to use Siri.
3rd generation or 4th generation?
Apple has launched a Siri Remote (4th generation) alongside its newest Apple TV 4K. On Apple’s store page the 4th generation keeps the same 136 × 35 × 9.25 mm size and weighs 69.6 g, against 66 g for the Siri Remote 3rd Generation, and Apple reserves Precision Finding for the 4th generation when it is paired with a supported iPhone. Apple also states that Find My can play a sound or locate Siri Remote models from the 2nd generation onwards. If you want the newest model, look at the 4th generation; if you simply want a genuine USB-C clickpad remote for an existing Apple TV, the 3rd generation does that job.
Who This Is Not For
The Siri Remote 3rd Generation is not a universal remote: it pairs only with Apple TV, and it controls a TV or receiver just for power, input, volume and mute. It is not the newest Siri Remote, since Apple now sells a 4th generation with Precision Finding. It has no keyboard, no backlight and no replaceable battery, and Apple does not include a power adapter for charging.
