Description

The Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable (1 m) is Apple’s full-featured USB-C cable: it carries Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 data at up to 40Gb/s, USB 3 data at up to 10Gb/s, DisplayPort video and up to 100W of charging power over a single lead. The jacket is a black braided weave that coils without tangling, and the Thunderbolt logo on each connector sleeve makes it easy to pick out of a drawer full of look-alike USB-C cables. At one metre it suits a laptop next to a dock, an external SSD or a monitor on the same desk.

How It Differs From a Regular USB-C Cable

Every USB-C cable looks the same from the outside, but what runs through it varies widely. Apple’s own USB-C Charge Cable supports charging, yet Apple notes that its data speed is limited to 480Mb/s (USB 2.0) and that it does not carry video. The Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable is built for the opposite case: one cable that charges, moves data at full speed and drives a display.

That difference shows up when you plug a MacBook into a Thunderbolt dock or a fast external SSD. Over a basic charge cable the drive drops to USB 2.0 speed and a dock may not pass video at all; over this cable the link runs at whatever rate the devices at both ends support.

Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable Speeds: 40Gb/s and 10Gb/s

Apple rates the cable for Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 data transfer at up to 40Gb/s, and for USB 3.2 Gen 2 data at up to 10Gb/s. Those are ceilings: the real speed is set by the slower of the two devices you connect, so a USB 3.2 Gen 2 SSD runs at its own 10Gb/s limit, while a Thunderbolt drive or dock can use the full 40Gb/s.

Thunderbolt also allows up to six devices in a chain, and Apple notes that you can use this cable between your Mac and each device in that chain: from the Mac to a Thunderbolt dock, for example, and from the dock on to a Thunderbolt drive.

Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable: Displays and Video

For video, the cable carries DisplayPort High Bit Rate 3 (HBR3). Apple names displays such as the Apple Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR, Apple’s 6K monitor, among the screens it connects a Mac to, along with other displays that accept Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C video input.

It is not an HDMI cable. To reach a TV or a monitor that only has HDMI inputs you still need an adapter. And whether a particular resolution and refresh rate works depends on your Mac and on the display, not on the cable alone.

Charging at up to 100W

The Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable delivers up to 100W to a connected device, so it can charge a MacBook Air, a MacBook Pro, an iPad or an iPhone from a USB-C power adapter. Apple also says it can be used to connect iPhone 15 Pro or later models to a Mac.

100W is the cap. A MacBook Pro that supports faster charging through a 240W USB-C cable will still charge on this one, but at no more than 100W, so a long render on battery power will refill more slowly than on Apple’s higher-rated charge cable.

Who This Is Not For

If you only charge a phone or a tablet, this is more cable than you need; a standard USB-C charge cable covers that job. And if your Mac has Thunderbolt 5 ports and you work with Thunderbolt 5 drives or docks, Apple now sells a Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) Pro Cable rated for up to 120Gb/s and 240W, which is the better match.

At 1 m, the Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable is short for setups where the dock or drive sits under the desk or the monitor is wall-mounted; Apple makes the same cable in 1.8 m and 3 m lengths for those cases.
