The Inkling Squid Green Figure
Nintendo first released the Inkling Squid on 29 May 2015, alongside the original Splatoon on Wii U. It shows the Inkling in its squid form, the shape players take to swim through their own ink, in the bright lime green used for the launch figures. Nintendo later issued the same squid design in orange (2016) and neon purple (2017) as separate figures, so the green squid is the original version of this amiibo.
Like every amiibo, it is a painted figure fixed to a round base. There are no batteries and nothing to charge: the NFC chip in the base is powered by the console’s reader when you tap it. Nintendo notes that individual figures can show small variations from the pictures, which is normal for painted collectibles.
What the Inkling Squid Green Does in Splatoon
In Splatoon 3 on Nintendo Switch, the Inkling Squid Green is a read/write amiibo. Nintendo lists exclusive gear, the chance to take in-game photos with the character, and the ability to save your customised gear, weapon and settings to the figure, so you can carry a favourite loadout to a friend’s console.
In Splatoon 2, the figure’s character appears in the game and befriends you, and you can again store gear and settings on the amiibo. In the first Splatoon on Wii U it works as a read-only amiibo that unlocks new missions; beating them earns special weapons and gear.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Other Games
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the Inkling Squid Green becomes a Figure Player: a computer-controlled fighter that Nintendo describes as one that grows and evolves over time. It trains by fighting, and its progress is written to the figure itself, not to the console.
Outside Splatoon, Nintendo’s compatibility list is long. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom it gives weapons and materials; in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe it unlocks a Mii suit based on the character’s look; in Animal Crossing: New Horizons it lets you invite a character to your campsite, set up a photo shoot and get a themed poster; in Super Mario Bros. Wonder it gives a power-up on a course. Kirby, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter Rise, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and many Wii U and 3DS titles also read it, usually for random items or small bonuses.
How amiibo Work on Each Console
On Nintendo Switch you hold the Inkling Squid Green over the NFC touchpoint on the right Joy-Con control stick or on a Pro Controller. On Wii U the reader is on the GamePad, and the New Nintendo 3DS family has a reader built in. Older Nintendo 3DS and 2DS models need Nintendo’s separate NFC Reader/Writer accessory.
Read-only games simply check the figure and hand out their bonus. Read/write games such as Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3 and Smash Bros. Ultimate store data on it, and an amiibo holds save data for one game at a time. To move it from Smash to Splatoon, for example, you first clear the existing data in the console’s amiibo settings.
Who This Is Not For
The figure is not a game and does not unlock full game content on its own. In most titles outside Splatoon and Smash the reward is a handful of random items, and many of those games give the same bonus for any amiibo, so a buyer who only wants unlocks may be better served by a figure they already own.
The Inkling Squid Green is also a collectible first released in 2015, priced as one. If you want the orange or neon purple squid, or the humanoid Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy figures, those are separate products. Players without a Switch, Wii U or 3DS have no way to use the chip at all.
