Why choose the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB
Most people who buy a 4TB NVMe drive want one thing: room for everything on one fast drive. A modern game library, a Lightroom catalogue, a folder of 4K footage and Windows itself can all live on the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB without a second disk. Samsung positions the 990 EVO Plus as the step above its entry drives and below the 990 PRO: Gen4-class speed, very low power draw and a slim 2.38 mm profile that fits laptops and small desktops as easily as large towers.
Samsung builds the controller, the V-NAND TLC flash and the Magician management software itself, so the whole drive comes from one maker. The Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB is the largest capacity in the 990 EVO Plus range on Samsung’s site.

Speed of the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB in real numbers
Samsung quotes up to 7,250 MB/s sequential read and up to 6,300 MB/s sequential write for the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB. Random performance is rated at up to 1,050,000 IOPS read and up to 1,400,000 IOPS write with 4KB blocks at queue depth 32. Samsung measured these figures on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X system with an ASRock X670E Taichi board, 32GB of DDR5-4800 and Windows 11 Pro using IOmeter 1.1.0, and notes that results vary with system hardware and configuration.
Write figures were measured with Intelligent TurboWrite enabled. Samsung states that TurboWrite operates only within a specific data transfer size, so a very long single copy can drop below the headline write speed once that buffer is used up. For everyday work, game installs and project files this rarely matters. Against the older 990 EVO, Samsung says sequential read is up to 45% faster.
PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2: which slot to use
The 990 EVO Plus is an unusual dual-mode design. It runs as a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive in the M.2 slots most current PCs have, and it can also run as a PCIe 5.0 x2 drive in boards that wire a Gen5 slot with two lanes. Samsung’s datasheet adds that the drive is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, where it will work at the lower speed that interface allows.
In practice, put the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB in any free M.2 2280 slot that supports NVMe. On most AMD AM5 and Intel desktop boards, the slot closest to the CPU gives full PCIe 4.0 x4 speed. In a laptop, check the maker’s manual for the M.2 length and whether the slot is NVMe, because some older notebooks only accept SATA M.2 drives.

Cooler, more efficient and built to last
Samsung says the nickel-coated controller raises MB/s per watt by 73% compared with the 990 EVO. The datasheet lists average power of about 5.5 W while reading and 4.8 W while writing, around 60 mW at idle with APST on, and about 5 mW in the deepest L1.2 sleep state. Those low figures help laptop battery life and keep temperatures in check in small cases.
For endurance, Samsung rates the 4TB model at 2,400 TBW, and lists an MTBF of 1.5 million hours. Operating temperature is 0 to 70°C as reported by S.M.A.R.T., with good airflow recommended, and the drive is rated for 1,500 G non-operating shock for 0.5 ms. Samsung includes no heatsink and lists no installation kit, so use your motherboard’s M.2 cover if it has one.
Setting up the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB
Installation takes a few minutes: power down, remove the M.2 screw or latch, slide the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB in at an angle, press it down and secure it. Windows will see it as a new disk; initialise it in Disk Management, or clone your old drive first if you want to keep your current system. Samsung Magician software handles firmware updates, health monitoring and performance tools, and the drive supports TRIM, automatic garbage collection and S.M.A.R.T. reporting.
Security-minded users get AES 256-bit hardware encryption with TCG/Opal 2.0 and IEEE 1667 support, for users who need a self-encrypting drive. Usable space on the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB is a little under 4TB because Samsung counts 1GB as one billion bytes and formatting takes some room.

Who This Is Not For
This drive is not for anyone who needs a PCIe 5.0 x4 drive for maximum Gen5 speeds; its top figures are Gen4-class. It is not a SATA drive, so it will not work in an M.2 slot that only supports SATA. It has no heatsink in the box. Samsung does not list PlayStation 5 compatibility for this model, so we do not claim it; PS5 owners should check Sony’s own M.2 requirements before buying. It uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) rather than onboard cache memory, which suits most users but may matter for heavy, sustained server-style workloads.
