The Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White is the white, all-digital version of Microsoft’s smaller current-generation console with a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD, twice the storage of the original 512 GB Robot White model. Xbox lists this edition as available from 15 October 2024. It runs the same Xbox Series X|S games and features, targets 1440p gaming at up to 120 frames per second in supported games, and has no disc drive at all. In the box you get the console, an Xbox Wireless Controller in Robot White, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a power cord. The Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White is sold here new and sealed.

All-digital: no disc drive, by design
The first thing to know about the Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White is that it does not play discs. Xbox states plainly that disc-based games are not compatible with the 512 GB or 1 TB Series S consoles. Every game is bought or downloaded digitally, through the Microsoft Store on the console, xbox.com or an Xbox Game Pass membership. Digital Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles you already own that are in the backward compatibility catalogue appear automatically in the Ready to Install section. If you buy used discs, borrow games from friends or resell games after finishing them, a disc-based Xbox Series X suits you better.

1 TB of custom NVMe SSD storage
Storage is the reason to choose the Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White over the 512 GB model. Modern games are large and on an all-digital console every one of them must be fully downloaded, so the extra space means fewer deletions and re-downloads. Microsoft quotes I/O throughput of 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed with its custom hardware decompression block, which is what makes load times short. Part of the 1 TB is used by the system, and Microsoft does not publish the exact free space on its spec page. You can add 1 TB Storage Expansion Cards that match internal SSD performance, or a USB 3.1 external drive; both are sold separately.

Performance: 1440p at up to 120 FPS
Inside the Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White is a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU with eight cores at 3.8 GHz (3.6 GHz with SMT), a custom RDNA 2 GPU rated at 4 teraflops with 20 compute units at 1.565 GHz, and 10 GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit bus. Xbox lists the gaming resolution as 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K, and a performance target of up to 120 FPS. That 120 FPS figure needs supported games and a display that accepts it; many large games run at lower frame rates. The HDMI 2.1 port supports Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate and AMD FreeSync.

Xbox Velocity Architecture and game library
The Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White uses the Xbox Velocity Architecture, which Microsoft credits for faster loading and Quick Resume, letting you switch between several suspended games and pick up where you left off. Xbox says the console plays thousands of games across four generations of Xbox, and games that support Xbox’s cross-generation upgrades give you the best version for the console you play on. Backward compatible titles can gain faster load times, higher resolution, steadier frame rates and better input latency on the Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White. Your existing Xbox One controllers and headsets also work.

Robot White design, sound and connections
The Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White measures 6.5 x 15.1 x 27.5 cm and weighs 4.25 lb (about 1.93 kg) according to Xbox, so it fits on a crowded TV unit or in a bag. It can stand upright or lie on its side. The Robot White finish has the black circular vent that marks the Series S. Connections are one HDMI 2.1 port, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi and a dedicated dual-band Xbox Wireless radio for accessories. Sound output covers L-PCM up to 7.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD with Atmos. Xbox also notes it was the first Xbox console to use post-consumer recycled plastics.

Who This Is Not For
Skip the Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White if you have a collection of game discs or like buying used games: it has no disc drive and none can be added. If you own a large 4K TV and want native 4K gaming, the Xbox Series X is the better match, since Series S games render at 1440p and are upscaled. Slow or capped internet is a real problem too, because every game and update has to be downloaded. Online multiplayer in most games needs a paid Xbox Game Pass membership that includes it, and Microsoft lists no Bluetooth on the console, so ordinary Bluetooth headphones do not connect directly.
