Description

The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is Logitech G’s base-station gaming headset, sold under the official name ASTRO A50 (Gen 5) and built around one idea: three gaming systems stay plugged into the base at once, and the headset follows whichever one you are using. Every number on this page comes from Logitech’s own published specification. Two figures commonly repeated for this headset elsewhere are wrong, and both are corrected below.

What the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 Actually Does

The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is two pieces: a wireless over-ear headset and a base station that both charges it and acts as the switching hub. Logitech’s part numbers are A00186 for the headset and A00187 for the base. The headset weighs 375 g and connects over LIGHTSPEED wireless with a rated range of 15 metres.

The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 base station measures 147.7 mm deep, 123.4 mm wide and 40 mm tall. It carries three USB-C device inputs and one USB-C power input. That last detail is not a footnote: Logitech’s own setup guide states the base station does not support USB bus power and requires external power to function, so it needs its own supply rather than drawing from a console.

PLAYSYNC Audio: Three Systems, One Switch

PLAYSYNC Audio is the feature the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is named for. Connect up to three systems to the base station over USB-C and audio follows your selection without re-pairing the headset or swapping a dongle between machines. Logitech describes it as three-system audio switching via USB.

It is worth being precise about what PLAYSYNC does here, because Logitech sells two versions of it. On this model it handles audio only. Logitech’s own support documentation puts it plainly: the A50 X is capable of HDMI video and audio processing, while this model is PLAYSYNC audio processing only. Switching consoles on the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 moves your sound automatically, but your television input is still your job.

Drivers, Frequency Response and Bit Depth

The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 drivers are 40 mm PRO-G Graphene. Logitech quotes headphone frequency response as 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, and the microphone at 60 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The wireless link carries up to 24-bit 48 kHz audio to the headset.

On a PC the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 base station presents three separate USB audio endpoints, which Logitech documents in the setup guide: A50 Game at 24-bit 48 kHz playback, A50 Voice at 16-bit 48 kHz for playback and input, and A50 StreamPort at 16-bit 48 kHz for recording. That split is what lets a streamer route game audio and chat separately. Logitech does not publish a separate console bit depth on its specification page, so any console-specific figure quoted elsewhere is not coming from Logitech’s own spec.

Battery: Up to 24 Hours, and the Condition Attached

Logitech rates battery life on the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 as up to 24 hours at 78 dB. The second half of that sentence is the part usually dropped, and it is the part that matters. 78 dB is a moderate listening level. Play louder than that and the figure comes down, because a headset amplifier draws more current to drive the drivers harder.

Recharging the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 takes approximately three hours, per Logitech. In normal use the base station handles it: the headset charges whenever it is docked, so a headset returned to the base between sessions rarely reaches empty. The headset also charges through the USB-C port on the right ear cup, and the status LED reports the charge state, including a breathing red light when under fifteen minutes of playtime remain.

The Microphone and Simultaneous Bluetooth

The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 microphone is a flip-to-mute boom with an omnidirectional pickup pattern, sampling at up to 16-bit 48 kHz. Flipping the boom up mutes it, which is a mechanical action rather than a software one, so there is no ambiguity about whether your team can hear you.

Bluetooth on the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is version 5.0 plus LE. Some listings for this headset claim Bluetooth 5.2; Logitech’s published specification says 5.0 + LE, and that is the figure used here. Bluetooth runs alongside the LIGHTSPEED connection rather than replacing it, so a phone call or a music stream can sit on top of game audio without dropping the console.

Platforms It Supports

Logitech’s specification page for the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 and later, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One X and S, and PlayStation 4 and 5. Logitech’s product page additionally states compatibility with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in docked mode over USB, which is the more recently updated of the two sources.

Software control runs through Logitech G HUB on a PC and the Logitech G app on iOS and Android, which is where microphone noise reduction and EQ settings live.

Who This Is Not For

If you want your television input to switch with your audio, this is the wrong model. The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 does PLAYSYNC audio only. The version with HDMI 2.1 video switching is the A50 X, and paying less for this one means keeping the TV remote in hand.

If you own four systems, the base station has three USB-C device inputs, so something gets unplugged. If you were counting on running the base from a console’s USB port, Logitech states it needs external power. And if you play loud, treat the 24-hour rating as the best case at 78 dB rather than a number you will see.

At 375 g the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is not a lightweight headset either. It is a desk-and-sofa product that lives on its base station, not something to travel with, and there is no published wired analogue mode to fall back on if the battery does run out away from the dock.

FAQ

Does the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 really last 24 hours?

24 hours is Logitech’s rating at 78 dB, which is a moderate listening level. Above that volume the battery lasts less time. Logitech quotes roughly three hours to recharge, and the base station charges the headset whenever it is docked.

Does it switch my TV input between consoles?

No. This model handles PLAYSYNC Audio only. Logitech’s support documentation states that the A50 X is the version capable of HDMI video and audio processing, while this one switches audio alone.

What Bluetooth version does it use?

5.0 plus LE, according to Logitech’s published specification. Listings that quote Bluetooth 5.2 for this headset do not match what Logitech publishes. Bluetooth can run at the same time as the LIGHTSPEED connection.

How many systems can stay connected at once?

3 systems, using the three USB-C device inputs on the base station. A fourth machine means unplugging one of them.

Can the base station run from a console USB port?

No. Logitech’s setup guide states the base station does not support USB bus power and requires external power to function.

Does it work with a Nintendo Switch?

Yes, in docked mode over USB, according to Logitech’s product page. Logitech’s separate specification page lists Windows, macOS, Xbox and PlayStation without naming Switch, so the product page is the source for that one.

How big are the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 drivers?

40 mm PRO-G Graphene drivers, with a quoted headphone frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

What warranty and returns apply?

1 year from Totot against manufacturing defects, with a 14-day return window for a defective or non-conforming item. Report shipping damage within 48 hours of delivery.
