The JBL Boombox 4 Squad is the camouflage edition of JBL’s flagship portable speaker. Under the camo pattern it is the full Boombox 4: JBL rates it at 210W RMS on mains power and 200W RMS on battery, up to 28 hours of play that stretches to 34 with Playtime Boost, IP68 dust and water sealing, and a battery you can pull out and replace. The pattern is the reason to choose it. It suits desert camps, wadi trips, fishing boats and weekend cabins, where a plain black or bright speaker would look out of place, and it hides the dust and mud that outdoor trips leave behind.

Who the Squad camo suits
Pick the JBL Boombox 4 Squad if your speaker lives in the back of a 4×4 next to the cool box and the camping chairs. The broken camo pattern hides dust, fine sand and mud splashes far better than any solid colour, so it still looks clean after a weekend in the desert when a white or blue unit would show every mark. It also fits the look of outdoor gear such as tents, tarps and hunting or fishing equipment. If you mostly use a speaker by the pool at home, a solid colour may suit you better; the Squad pattern is built for rougher places.

Caring for the camo finish
Because the JBL Boombox 4 Squad is sealed to IP68, cleaning after a trip is simple: rinse sand or salt off the fabric grille with fresh water and let it dry in the shade before charging. Avoid strong solvents on the printed fabric. The pattern is printed on the grille fabric, which JBL makes from recycled material, and the top panel and handle carry the controls. A soft brush lifts dried mud from the weave without scrubbing the print.

Power, drivers and sound
JBL’s power figures are continuous RMS, not peak. Plugged into the wall, the woofers get 2 × 65W and the tweeters 2 × 40W, for 210W. Off the battery the JBL Boombox 4 Squad gives the woofers 2 × 60W, so the total becomes 200W, a drop of roughly 5%. Two 123 mm (5-inch) woofers, two 20 mm (0.75-inch) tweeters and three passive radiators, two circular and one racetrack, cover 37 Hz to 20 kHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB. AI Sound Boost adjusts output to the track in real time for more power and less distortion. Press the Bass Boost key once for the first bass setting, again for Punchy Bass. JBL does not state a maximum SPL.

Battery life and swapping the pack
A 99.02Wh lithium-ion pack powers the JBL Boombox 4 Squad. JBL quotes up to 28 hours per charge and up to 6 more hours with Playtime Boost, 34 in total, without saying what volume it measured at, so expect less when you play loud for a crowd. Recharging from empty takes 3 hours. On a long camping trip you can carry a spare pack and swap it in three steps; JBL sells that spare separately. The USB powerbank output can also top up a phone at camp.

Connections, size and weight
Bluetooth 5.4 (A2DP 1.4, AVRCP 1.6) handles wireless play, and Auracast stereo pairs two Boombox 4 speakers or links other Auracast-enabled JBL models. Plug a laptop into the USB-C port for lossless playback when the source offers lossless content. The mains input takes 100 to 240V at 50/60 Hz, so the JBL Boombox 4 Squad works on UAE sockets with the supplied cord. JBL gives the size as about 51 × 26 × 21 cm and the weight as 5.89 kg, lighter than the previous model, carried by one wide top handle.

Who This Is Not For
The JBL Boombox 4 Squad is not for karaoke or light shows: it has no microphone or guitar input and no lighting. It has no 3.5 mm AUX, HDMI or optical input, so it cannot play TV sound. At 5.89 kg it is too heavy for long hikes on foot, and it will not fit a daypack. The spare battery for the JBL Boombox 4 Squad costs extra, and JBL does not say the speaker floats.

Can I wash sand off it?
Yes. It is IP68 rated, so you can rinse the grille with fresh water and let it dry before charging.
