The Amazon Kindle Scribe is a large Kindle you can write on. This is the 2024 model in Metallic Jade with 64 GB of storage, the largest capacity Amazon offered for it. You read books and PDFs on a 10.2-inch, 300 ppi glare-free screen, write notes directly into the page or in the margins, and keep handwritten notebooks, lists and journals, all with the Premium Pen that comes in the box and attaches magnetically. The 2024 redesign brought flush, even white borders like a paper notebook, an upgraded pen with a soft-tipped eraser, and AI notebook tools. Amazon has since launched a newer 11-inch Scribe; this unit is the 10.2-inch 2024 version.

A 10.2-inch screen made for reading and writing
Amazon lists a 10.2-inch, glare-free, front-lit display at 300 ppi with 16 levels of grey, the largest screen of its Kindle range at the time. The front light adjusts automatically, and you can warm its tone for evening reading. Because it is e-paper rather than an LCD, it stays readable outdoors and is gentle for long sessions. The screen rotates automatically, so the Amazon Kindle Scribe works for left- and right-handed writers. The device measures 196 x 230 x 5.7 mm and weighs 433 g without the pen, light for its size but a two-handed device for most people.
Premium Pen: no charging, pencil-like eraser
The 2024 Premium Pen is weighted to feel like a real pen, attaches magnetically to the side of the Amazon Kindle Scribe and, Amazon says, never needs to be charged. The top end is a soft-tipped eraser that Amazon describes as feeling like a pencil eraser. There are three tools (pen, highlighter and eraser), each with five thicknesses, plus undo and redo. The pen weighs 17 g, and the box includes five replacement tips and a tip replacement tool, so a worn nib is a quick swap rather than a new purchase.
Active Canvas: notes inside books and documents
With Active Canvas you start writing directly on a book page and the text moves to make space around your note, which stays anchored even if you change the font size or layout. You can also write in the margins and collapse notes to see the original page. Microsoft Word files and other reflowable documents can be marked up the same way, while PDFs sent through Send to Kindle take handwriting directly. For students reading textbooks and professionals reviewing contracts or reports, this is the main reason to choose the Amazon Kindle Scribe over a Paperwhite.
Notebooks and AI tools
The built-in notebook offers 18 templates for lists, journals and meeting notes, organised in searchable folders. Handwritten notes can be converted to text and emailed. Amazon’s AI notebook tools can summarise up to 15 notebook pages into short bullets, or refine messy handwriting into a neat script font that you can still edit. Amazon does not state on the product page which countries these AI tools work in, so do not rely on them on a UAE account. The Scribe does not sync with OneNote, Dropbox or Google Drive, per Amazon’s own FAQ.
Battery, charging and 64 GB storage
Amazon rates a charge at up to 12 weeks with half an hour of reading a day, or up to 3 weeks with half an hour of writing a day, both with wireless off and the light at setting 13. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours with a 9W USB-C adapter, or about 7 hours from a computer. The 64 GB option gives the most room for large PDFs, comics and Audible audiobooks, which play over Bluetooth headphones. Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks handles downloads.
Who This Is Not For
The Amazon Kindle Scribe is not waterproof; Amazon itself says not to use it in the bath or by the pool, and points to the Paperwhite instead. The screen is greyscale, so colour PDFs, comics and diagrams lose their colour. It is not a tablet: no video, social media or Android apps. A power adapter is not included. At 433 g it is heavier than smaller Kindles for one-handed reading in bed, and the AI note tools are not confirmed for UAE accounts.
