The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte Edition (2025) is a 12-inch tablet built for people who read, write and work on a screen for hours. Its PaperMatte display uses an etched anti-glare surface that HUAWEI says cuts reflections from lamps and windows, so the screen looks closer to paper than to glass. This unit is the Wi-Fi model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage in the Greenery colour. HUAWEI UAE lists the Kirin T92B processor, a 10,100mAh battery, a 66W SuperCharge charger and the Smart Magnetic Keyboard in the box. It runs HarmonyOS 4.3, which has no Google Play services, so it suits buyers who are comfortable with HUAWEI AppGallery.
Table of Contents
PaperMatte display: 2.8K, up to 144Hz
The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte uses a 12-inch IPS panel at 2800 × 1840 and 280 PPI with P3 wide colour. HUAWEI rates the brightness at 1000 nits typical in strong light or with HDR content, with the battery above 50%. The refresh rate is adaptive: HUAWEI says it switches between 30, 60, 90, 120 and 144Hz, and the actual range depends on the setting you choose. The 2025 PaperMatte surface uses nanoscale anti-glare etching; HUAWEI claims 50% less surface sparkle than the 2024 PaperMatte Edition and up to 99% less light interference in its own lab tests under simulated outdoor light. Matte screens look a little less punchy than glossy ones, which is the trade for reading in bright rooms.
Eye comfort and handwriting
The screen carries TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) and Flicker-Free certifications, and the PaperMatte Edition adds SGS Low Visual Fatigue 2.1 Premium Performance. There is an eye comfort mode and an e-book mode in colour or black and white. For handwriting, the HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte supports the HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro, which is sold separately and connects over NearLink. HUAWEI says 16,384 pressure levels work only on certain HUAWEI tablets and vary by app, and features such as Pinch, Squeeze and Rotate need specific Notes or GoPaint versions. The etched surface gives the pen tip a little friction, closer to writing on paper.
Performance, memory and HarmonyOS
Inside is the octa-core Kirin T92B with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. HUAWEI claims a 27% performance gain from the cooling system compared with the 2024 MatePad 12 X on HarmonyOS 4.2; it does not publish other benchmarks. The tablet runs HarmonyOS 4.3 with WPS Office laid out like a laptop and up to three windows at once in supported apps after an OTA update. HarmonyOS does not include Google Play services, so apps come from HUAWEI AppGallery. Check that the apps you rely on, such as banking or school apps, are available there before you buy the HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte.
Battery and 66W charging
The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte battery is 10,100mAh typical (10,000mAh rated). HUAWEI quotes up to 14 hours of local 1080p video playback at 200 nits from a full charge, and real use will differ with brightness and apps. Charging runs at up to 66W with the HUAWEI SuperCharge charger that comes in the box, and HUAWEI claims a full charge in about 85 minutes with that standard charger. The USB-C port supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 transfer with a compatible cable, plus OTG for flash drives.
Keyboard, cameras, audio and build
HUAWEI UAE lists the HUAWEI Smart Magnetic Keyboard in the box; it weighs 308 g, has 1.5 mm key travel and connects over NearLink. A mouse is not included. The rear camera is 50MP f/1.8 with autofocus and LED flash, the front camera is 8MP f/2.2, and both record up to 1080p video. Sound comes from six HUAWEI SOUND speakers with two microphones. The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte all-metal unibody measures 270 × 183 × 5.9 mm and weighs about 555 g. This is the Wi-Fi model (2.4GHz and 5GHz) with Bluetooth 5.2, no SIM slot and Wi-Fi positioning only, with no GPS.
Who This Is Not For
The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte is not for anyone who depends on Google apps and the Play Store, because HarmonyOS 4.3 has no Google Play services. It is not for anyone who needs mobile data or GPS navigation: this is the Wi-Fi model with Wi-Fi positioning only. It is not for people who want the most saturated, glossy picture for films, since the matte finish trades some contrast for less glare. The M-Pencil Pro is not included and costs extra.
