Two modes: MP3 in the water, Bluetooth on land
In MP3 mode the Shokz OpenSwim Pro play files stored on the headphones, so they work while you swim. In Bluetooth mode they connect to your phone or watch for running, cycling and gym sessions. Shokz is explicit that Bluetooth is not functional underwater, because water disrupts the signal; you cannot stream from a phone at the poolside during laps.
You switch the Shokz OpenSwim Pro between the modes on the headphones or in the Shokz App.
32GB of storage and supported formats
Shokz lists 32GB of usable storage, which it estimates at about 8,000 standard-quality songs of 4MB each or about 4,000 high-quality songs of 8MB each. Supported formats are MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, M4A, APE and WMA. You load your own files; music inside streaming apps is not transferred to the headphones, so bring a library of files you own.
The Shokz App (version 5.6.0 or later, iOS 13.0+ and Android 8.0+) lets you switch playlists, choose the Swimming EQ mode, change modes and update firmware.
Waterproofing: IP68 to 2 m
The Shokz OpenSwim Pro are rated IP68 and Shokz states immersion up to 2 metres, which covers pool swimming and shallow open water. The microphone carries the same IP68 rating. Shokz also notes that waterproofing is not permanent and can decrease over time with normal wear and tear, so rinse them with fresh water after chlorinated or salt water and let them dry before charging.
Battery life by mode
Shokz rates the Shokz OpenSwim Pro at up to 9 hours in Bluetooth mode and up to 6 hours in MP3 mode, and says these figures are the same on land and underwater. A full charge takes about 1.5 hours with the included 4-pin magnetic charging cable.
Sound and fit
The Shokz OpenSwim Pro use Shokz’ 8th-generation bone conduction with PremiumPitch 2.0+, which Shokz says gives less vibration and leakage and better sound than the 7th generation. Sound travels through the cheekbones, so your ears stay open: on land you hear traffic and other runners, and in the pool you can wear the included earplugs to block water and make the sound more direct. The whole Shokz OpenSwim Pro unit weighs 27.3 g, and multipoint pairing is available through the Shokz App.
Why Grey
Grey is the neutral choice among the three Shokz OpenSwim Pro colours. It is less conspicuous than Red and hides chlorine marks and scuffs better than White, which makes it the easy option for daily lane swimmers and triathletes who train every morning. If you want high visibility in open water or on the road at dusk, Red stands out more, and White suits a lighter swim kit.
Who This Is Not For
If you only use streaming apps and do not keep music files, the pool mode will be of little use to you, because Bluetooth does not work underwater. The rating is 2 metres, so these are not for diving. MP3 mode lasts up to 6 hours, less than Bluetooth mode. Charging uses a proprietary magnetic cable; lose it and a standard USB-C cable will not help. And bone conduction sounds different from earbuds, with less deep bass.
