Description

The Shokz OpenComm2 Black is a bone conduction headset built around calls. A DSP noise-canceling boom microphone sits in front of your mouth, while the speakers rest on your cheekbones and leave both ears open to the room. Shokz rates it at up to 16 hours of talk time, 35 g and IP55. It is the headset-only OpenComm2: it pairs over Bluetooth with a phone or laptop, and the box has no USB wireless adapter. The units shown are the 2025 Upgrade, which Shokz says charges over USB-C.

Shokz OpenComm2 Black or OpenComm2 UC?

Shokz sells the same headset in two boxes. The Shokz OpenComm2 Black connects directly over Bluetooth, the way earbuds connect to a phone. The Shokz OpenComm2 UC adds a Loop120 USB wireless adapter that plugs into a computer, which helps in offices where laptop Bluetooth is weak, locked by IT or already busy with a mouse and keyboard.

If most of your calls go through a phone, or your laptop’s own Bluetooth works well, the adapter adds cost without adding anything you will use. That is the buyer the Shokz OpenComm2 Black is for: remote workers, drivers, dispatchers and anyone who takes calls on a mobile while moving around.

The boom microphone and cVc noise reduction

Shokz describes the microphone as a DSP noise-canceling boom mic using cVc (Clear Voice Capture) technology, with a double noise reduction microphone design. The idea is simple: the capsule sits close to your mouth, so your voice is much louder than the room, and the processing removes the steady background such as air-conditioning, traffic or a nearby conversation. Shokz lists microphone sensitivity at -38 dB ±3 dB.

On the Shokz OpenComm2 Black the boom swings on a hinge, so you can move it closer or further away. What you should not expect is studio recording quality: this is a voice microphone tuned for Teams, Zoom and phone calls.

Bone conduction: open ears through the working day

With the Shokz OpenComm2 Black, nothing goes inside or over your ears. Shokz’s 2025 Upgrade page cites 7th-generation bone conduction technology and PremiumPitch 2.0, and the published speaker figures are a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and 96 ±3 dB sensitivity. Because the ear canal stays open, you hear a colleague at your desk, a doorbell or a car behind you without taking the headset off.

Bone conduction does leak a little sound at higher volume. In a quiet room someone sitting beside you may hear a faint version of your call, so keep the volume moderate in shared spaces.

Battery and charging, with the conditions

Shokz rates the Shokz OpenComm2 Black at up to 16 hours of talk time or up to 8 hours of music listening per charge, with up to 14 days of standby. The difference between the two figures is normal: music drives the transducers harder than speech. The battery is a 183 mAh lithium polymer cell.

A full charge takes about 60 minutes, and 5 minutes on the charger gives around 2 hours of talk time. The 2025 Upgrade charges over USB-C with the cable in the box; earlier OpenComm2 units used a magnetic charging cable, so older chargers will not fit this version.

Connectivity, app and fit

Shokz lists Bluetooth 5.1 with a wireless range of up to 30 m (98 ft), and the headset pairs with devices using Bluetooth 3.1 or later. MultiPoint keeps two devices connected at once, for example a laptop and a phone. The Shokz App (Android phones only for this model, according to Shokz) handles MultiPoint, battery status, EQ modes and firmware updates.

The Shokz OpenComm2 Black wraparound frame has a soft silicone finish and the whole headset weighs 35 g. IP55 covers dust and sweat plus water jets at low pressure, so rain on the walk to the car is fine.

Living with the black finish

Black is the colour Shokz lists for the OpenComm2 2025 Upgrade, and it suits the job: the matte frame looks like any other office headset on a video call and does not draw the eye. The silicone does pick up skin oil, hair product and dust over time, which shows as grey patches on black. Wipe the frame with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, dry it before charging, and keep the small grille at the tip of the boom free of dust so your voice stays clear.

Who This Is Not For

Anyone whose computer has no usable Bluetooth: choose the UC version with the USB adapter instead. iPhone users who want app control, because Shokz lists the app for Android phones only for this model. People who mainly want music: bass through bone conduction is lighter than from earbuds and music time is 8 hours, not 16. Swimmers, since IP55 is not waterproof. And anyone who needs complete privacy in a silent room, because of the small sound leakage.
