The JBL Xtreme 5 Squad is the camouflage edition of JBL’s largest cylinder portable, and it is made for the outdoors crowd: desert camping, a weekend at the farm, a car boot full of gear. Under the camo fabric it is the full Xtreme 5, with a 98 x 145 mm woofer and two 20 mm tweeters, IP68 protection against dust and water, a 68Wh battery and a USB-C port that charges your phone as well as the speaker. JBL lists Squad alongside Black and Blue as the three Xtreme 5 colours.

A speaker for a night in the desert
At a camp there is no socket, and that is where the battery of the JBL Xtreme 5 Squad matters most. JBL rates the 68Wh pack for up to 24 hours, with Playtime Boost adding up to 4 hours by reshaping the sound to save power. At sensible volume that covers a long weekend away from power. The USB-C port doubles as a powerbank at 5V/3A, 9V/2A or 11V/2A, so the phone streaming the music can top itself up from the speaker. IP68 means the speaker is dust-tight, which matters as much as water when sand blows across the camp. JBL gives 40°C as the maximum operating temperature, so keep it in the tent shade at midday.

Why choose Squad over Black or Blue
Camouflage hides dirt. A black speaker shows every grey film of dust and every sandy handprint after a trip, and blue shows red desert sand clearly; the Squad pattern absorbs both, so the JBL Xtreme 5 Squad still looks presentable after a season of camping without constant wiping. It suits people who already own outdoor gear in olive, khaki and camo tones, hunters and anglers, off-road drivers who keep a speaker in the 4×4, and anyone who wants a speaker that looks like equipment rather than decor. Indoors, the JBL Xtreme 5 Squad pattern is bolder; if your speaker will mostly sit in a living room, Black blends in more easily.

Sound output and AI Sound Boost
JBL rates the JBL Xtreme 5 Squad with two figures. On AC power through the PD adaptor, the woofer gives 90W RMS and each tweeter 20W RMS; on battery, 60W RMS and 15W RMS. Both are RMS ratings, not peak figures, so at a camp running on battery the lower set is the one that applies. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz with a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB. AI Sound Boost analyses the track in real time and adjusts the tuning so bass stays controlled at high volume, and the JBL Portable app offers a 7-band EQ, light themes and firmware updates.

Charging and power on the road
A full charge of the JBL Xtreme 5 Squad takes about 3.5 hours, and JBL says 10 minutes on a PD adaptor adds about 2 hours of play, useful before you leave the house. The input accepts 5V, 9V, 12V or 15V at 3A, or 20V at 4A, so a suitable USB-C PD car charger or power station can feed it on the road. Remember that anything you charge from the powerbank output comes from the same battery that plays the music, so a phone top-up shortens playtime. Lossless audio is available over USB-C from compatible sources, but most campers will use Bluetooth 6.0 with SBC, AAC or LC3.

Carrying, linking and the rest
The JBL Xtreme 5 Squad measures 34.6 x 16.5 x 15.5 cm and weighs 2.9 kg, and it carries on an adjustable shoulder strap with floating hooks. Auracast lets two Xtreme 5 units play as a stereo pair, or several Auracast JBL speakers share one broadcast across a larger camp. The ambient lighting shifts with the music and also signals power, pairing, battery level and Auracast status, so the speaker is easy to find after dark. JBL lists no built-in microphone and no aptX or LDAC support.

Who This Is Not For
The JBL Xtreme 5 Squad is not for hikers counting grams: at 2.9 kg it is a strap-carried speaker. The JBL Xtreme 5 Squad camouflage pattern can look out of place in a minimal living room. There is no aptX or LDAC, and JBL lists no microphone, so no calls. The highest 90W RMS output needs AC power, which you rarely have at camp, and 24 hours assumes moderate volume. JBL also gives a 40°C maximum operating temperature, below many UAE summer afternoons, so direct sun is a problem.
