The JBL Tune 245NC Design
JBL describes the JBL Tune 245NC as stick-closed earbuds with an oval tube shape. The stick sits outside the ear and holds the microphones and touch area, while the closed bud seals into the ear canal with silicone tips. JBL says the oval tube adapts to the shape of the ear for a secure fit and good isolation, which is also what lets the noise cancelling work properly.
The black finish is the low-key option: it looks the same with a suit, gym kit or school uniform, and it hides scuffs on the case better than lighter colours. Three tip sizes come in the box, so take a minute to find the pair that seals; a poor seal is the most common reason earbuds sound thin.
Noise Cancelling and Smart Ambient
The JBL Tune 245NC uses Active Noise Cancelling to reduce steady background noise such as a bus engine, an air conditioner or office chatter. When you need to hear the world, Smart Ambient offers two modes: Ambient Aware lets outside sound in for safety, and TalkThru lowers the music so you can talk without taking the earbuds out.
VoiceAware lets you set how much of your own voice you hear during calls, which makes long calls feel less closed in. All of this is adjusted in the JBL Headphones app.
Battery Life With Its Conditions
JBL’s figure of 48 hours is the total with the charging case and noise cancelling off: up to 12 hours from the earbuds plus 36 hours from the case. With noise cancelling on, JBL quotes up to 10 hours from the earbuds plus 30 hours from the case, so plan around 40 hours in total if you keep ANC on all day. Talk time with ANC on is up to 6 hours.
Speed Charge gives about 4 hours of playback from a 15-minute charge, and a full charge from empty takes 2 hours over the USB-C cable in the box.
Sound, Calls and Connection
Inside each JBL Tune 245NC earbud is a 6mm dynamic driver tuned for JBL Pure Bass Sound, with a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz. JBL lists 4-mic technology for calls. Connection is Bluetooth 5.3, and JBL notes that LE Audio support will be added later through an over-the-air update rather than at launch.

Who This Is Not For
The JBL Tune 245NC is not for listeners who want high-resolution codecs: JBL does not list LDAC or similar codecs for it. IP54 covers sweat, rain and dust, but not swimming or submersion. Battery life drops from 12 to 10 hours per charge with noise cancelling on, and LE Audio is a promised update rather than a feature you can use on day one. If you dislike the look of stems, a round bud design will suit you better.
