The JBL Live 780NC is JBL’s over-ear noise-cancelling headphone built for long days away from a charger. JBL quotes up to 80 hours of playback with Bluetooth on and noise cancelling off, or up to 50 hours with noise cancelling on, and a 5-minute charge adds about 4 more hours. Six microphones drive True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0, the 40 mm drivers are Hi-Res certified for wired and wireless listening, and the whole headphone weighs 260 g and folds up to fit its pouch. This listing is the Black finish.

Table of Contents
JBL Live 780NC Battery: 80 Hours, With Conditions
The 80-hour figure is JBL’s rating with Bluetooth on and noise cancelling off. Turn ANC on and the rating drops to up to 50 hours, which is still more than two weeks of a typical commute. JBL also lists talk time: up to 33 hours with ANC off and up to 28 hours with it on.
When the JBL Live 780NC runs low, 5 minutes of charging gives up to 4 more hours, and a full charge from empty takes about 2 hours over USB-C. JBL’s box contents list a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio cable but not a separate USB-C charging cable, so keep your phone’s USB-C cable handy.
True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0
Six microphones feed JBL’s True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0, which keeps analysing the noise around you and adjusts the cancelling in real time — more for an aircraft cabin or a bus, less in a quiet office. When you need to hear your surroundings, Smart Ambient lets outside sound through from the JBL Headphones app.
For calls, the JBL Live 780NC uses two beamforming microphones aimed at your voice. JBL rates the microphone sensitivity at −38 dBV/Pa at 1 kHz.
Sound, Drivers and Personi-Fi 3.0
The JBL Live 780NC uses 40 mm dynamic drivers with a stated frequency response of 10 Hz to 40 kHz, 98 dB SPL sensitivity at 1 kHz, 32-ohm impedance and a maximum SPL of 94 dB. JBL describes the tuning as JBL Signature Sound and lists Hi-Res certification for both wired and wireless listening.
In the app, Personi-Fi 3.0 builds a listening profile for your hearing, JBL Spatial Sound widens the stage for films, and Low Volume Dynamic EQ keeps bass and treble present when you listen quietly. JBL also lists a Personal Sound Amplification feature and lets you customise the touch and button controls.
Bluetooth 6.0, Multipoint and Auracast
The JBL Live 780NC runs Bluetooth 6.0 with A2DP 1.4, AVRCP 1.6.3 and HFP 1.9. Multipoint keeps two devices connected at once, so a laptop call does not stop you taking one on your phone. It also supports LE Audio and Auracast, which JBL says lets you stream your own content to others or join an Auracast broadcast from the JBL Headphones app. JBL’s spec sheet does not list the Bluetooth codecs.
For wired use, plug the supplied USB-C to 3.5 mm cable (120 cm) into the headphone and into a 3.5 mm source such as an in-flight entertainment socket.
Comfort and Build
At 260 g the JBL Live 780NC sits in the middle for full-size noise-cancelling headphones. JBL uses soft, ergonomically shaped ear cups, a lightweight silicone headband and a metal hinge, and the design folds fully to fit the soft pouch in the box.
Why Black
Black is the default JBL Live 780NC finish and the easiest to live with. It does not show the grey marks that build up where hands grip the ear cups, it looks at home on a video call or a business trip, and scuffs on the headband are far less visible than on White or Sand. Wipe the ear cushions with a slightly damp cloth now and then so skin oil does not build up on the black surface. If you would like colour, JBL also lists Blue, Green, White and Sand.
Who This Is Not For
Skip the JBL Live 780NC if you want a traditional 3.5 mm socket on the headphone itself — wired listening goes through the USB-C port and the supplied adapter cable. It is also not the lightest option at 260 g, and it is not rated for sweat or water, so it is not a gym headphone. If you need a specific codec for your phone, JBL does not list codecs in its specifications.
