The Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo come as a two-figure pack that Nintendo calls the Alterna Set. It holds the Squid Sisters in their Splatoon 3 Alterna looks: Callie in a black dress with yellow ink, and Marie in a white coat holding a parasol. Nintendo released the pair on 5 September 2024, and the figures are sold only as this set, not individually.

What Is in the Alterna Set
The box holds two separate amiibo figures, each on its own base with its own NFC chip: Callie (Alterna) and Marie (Alterna). Nintendo lists both in the Splatoon series line, and its pages state that Callie (Alterna) is only sold as part of a set with Marie (Alterna). So the Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo always arrive together, and both can be used independently in a game.
The packaging on our photos is labelled Alterna Set, with the names Callie & Marie and the French names Ayo & Oly printed on the front. This set is a different product from the earlier Callie and Marie two-pack released for the first Splatoon, which shows the sisters in their original outfits.
What the Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo Do in Splatoon 3
Splatoon 3 reads and writes data to both figures. According to Nintendo, tapping one gives you exclusive gear and the chance to snap in-game photos with that character. Each figure can also store your customised gear, weapon and settings, so you can carry your loadout to another Switch and load it there.
Because there are two figures, you get two sets of character rewards and two separate save slots for loadouts. Splatoon 3 remains the game where the Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo do the most, and a Splatoon fan who already owns the game gets the clearest value from the pack.
Other Compatible Games
Nintendo’s page for Callie (Alterna) lists further read-only support. Super Mario Bros. Wonder gives a power-up while on a course; on Nintendo Switch 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can also change certain decorations in Bellabel Park. Donkey Kong Bananza gives a giant sphere made of a random material, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition gives a selection of items and a chest.
The same page lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mega Man 11 (helpful items once a day) and, on Nintendo 3DS, Mario Party: Star Rush. Nintendo notes that some games need a software update before they read amiibo, so update a game first if one of the Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo is not recognised.
Display and Build
Both Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo stand on Nintendo’s round grey bases, with splashes of yellow ink rising around their feet. Callie is posed mid-step with her long two-tone tentacles swinging; Marie holds an open parasol above her head, which makes her the taller of the two on a shelf.
Like every amiibo, neither figure needs a battery. The console powers the NFC chip for the moment the base is held over the reader. Splatoon collectors who want a single Inkling to go with the set can also look at our Inkling Squid Green amiibo, a separate figure from the same Splatoon series.
Who This Is Not For
Without Splatoon 3, the Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo offer mostly display value, because the bonuses in other games are small read-only items. Some of those rewards are limited to once a day or are random, and they are not Splatoon-themed.
The Callie and Marie Alterna amiibo cannot be bought separately, so a buyer who only wants Marie or only Callie still pays for the pair. On an original Nintendo Switch, only the right Joy-Con and the Pro Controller have an NFC reader, so the left Joy-Con alone cannot read the figures.
