Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X is the boxed Blu-ray release of Infinity Ward’s 2026 entry in the series, published by Activision and on sale since October 23, 2026. It is the Standard Edition on disc, and Activision confirms the physical edition carries the full base game: the Korean war campaign, the reworked multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode. Before you buy, check one thing at home: your console needs a disc drive, so this copy is meant for the standard Xbox Series X, not the Series S or the all-digital Series X.

Which Xbox Can Play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X on Disc?
Microsoft lists Modern Warfare 4 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, and states it is not available on Xbox One. The game itself runs on both current consoles, but a disc can only be read by a machine that has an optical drive. That means the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X disc works in the standard Xbox Series X with a disc drive. It will not load on the Xbox Series S or on the Xbox Series X Digital Edition, because neither has a drive. If you own one of those consoles, the digital version from the Microsoft Store is the route that fits your hardware. Once the disc is inserted, the console installs the game and then pulls any required update, as Activision describes in its installation guide.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X Performance: 4K at 60 fps or 1440p at 120 fps
On the official Xbox page for the game, Activision gives two performance targets for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X: 60 frames per second at 4K resolution, or 120 frames per second at 1440p. The Microsoft Store listing adds HDR10, Variable Refresh Rate, Spatial Sound and Dolby Atmos, and badges the title Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Activision also credits the console’s custom SSD with shorter loading and smoother frame rates, and points to low input latency between controller and screen. To get the 120 fps mode you need a display that accepts 120 Hz at 1440p; on a 60 Hz TV the 4K target is the sensible choice.
Keyboard, Mouse, Split-Screen and Cross-Play in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X
The Xbox store lists console keyboard and mouse support for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X, so you can plug a keyboard and mouse into the Series X and aim the way PC players do. Online multiplayer is listed for 2 to 60 players, with Xbox cross-platform multiplayer, which puts you in the same lobbies as players on other systems. Activision support confirms split-screen on Xbox Series X|S, and the store also lists shared or split screen, which is handy for two players on one sofa.
Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X
The story of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X is set during a North Korean invasion of the South. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean conscript, and as Captain Price, now acting outside the chain of command. Missions travel from Korean trenches to New York, Paris and a night raid in Mumbai. Multiplayer launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, Gunfight maps, large Big War maps with vehicles, and Kill Block, a training facility with more than 500 layouts. The new Ballistic Authority gunplay drops bloom and reworks recoil, while movement adds climbing and mantling. DMZ is the extraction mode, played solo or in a squad, inside a zone with shifting weather and objectives.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X: Game Pass, Online Subscription and Vault
Activision states on its Xbox page that Modern Warfare 4 will not come to Game Pass until holiday 2027, so buying the game is the only way to play it at launch. The Microsoft Store listing says online multiplayer on console needs a paid Game Pass online subscription; the description names Game Pass Essential, sold separately. The Vault Edition is digital only, and Activision states that physical copies cannot be upgraded to it. Digital pre-order items, such as the Inner Circuit blueprint and the Xbox digital credit, are tied to digital pre-orders. The store marks the digital game as Xbox Play Anywhere, but Activision does not say that a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X disc unlocks the PC version, so do not count on it.
Who This Is Not For
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Xbox Series X is rated ESRB Mature 17+ for blood and gore, intense violence, strong language and drug use, so it is for adults, not children. It does not run on Xbox One. The disc is useless on an Xbox Series S or a Series X Digital Edition, since both lack a drive. If you want to play online, budget for a Game Pass online subscription, and keep a steady connection: Activision says Multiplayer, Private Matches and DMZ need to stay online because of texture streaming. An Activision account is also required. Activision does not publish the Xbox install size or the language list for this disc, and Arabic support is not confirmed.
