Bose Immersive Audio in plain terms
Normal stereo on headphones seems to play inside your skull, because each driver fires straight into one ear. Bose Immersive Audio processes the signal to add the distance and direction cues your brain reads as space, so the sound stage spreads in front of and around you. Bose offers two settings. Still keeps the sound anchored in front of you, which suits a desk or an aircraft seat. Motion lets the stage move with your head, which suits walking. It works on whatever you play from any app, without special spatial mixes. Many listeners love it for films, series and live recordings and switch it off for dense pop or electronic tracks, which takes a single press on the QuietComfort Ultra Black.
Battery: 24 hours, or 18 with Immersive Audio
Bose publishes two figures for the QuietComfort Ultra Black: up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with it on. If you leave spatial audio running on long flights, plan around the lower number. Bose’s spec table lists 3 hours for a full charge, and its FAQ says a 15-minute charge gives up to 3 hours of playback, handy when you notice a low battery at the gate. Charging is over USB-C with the included USB-A to USB-C cable; no wall adapter is in the box.
Quiet, Aware and Immersion modes
Quiet Mode gives full noise cancelling for cabins, trains and open offices. Aware Mode lets the room in through the microphones, and ActiveSense softens sudden loud sounds such as a horn or a boarding announcement so they do not spike through. Immersion combines full noise cancelling with Immersive Audio, the mode most owners use on a flight. You cycle the modes with a button on the ear cup, and the Bose Music app lets you build and save custom modes, for example one for the commute and one for the desk.
CustomTune, comfort and calls
Each time you switch on the QuietComfort Ultra Black, CustomTune plays a short tone, measures how it reflects inside your ear and tunes the sound and noise cancelling to that measurement. It is automatic and takes a moment. For calls, the noise cancelling system uses eight microphones, and Bose uses microphone processing to focus on your voice. The build mixes plastic and aluminium with protein-leather cushions, a synthetic material that is soft and light but warms up during long sessions in a hot climate.
Connection, wired use and the box
Bluetooth 5.3 gives a range of up to 9 m, and multipoint keeps two source devices connected at once, such as a laptop and a phone. Bose lists Snapdragon Sound support with compatible Android phones; it does not list LDAC. For wired listening, the box includes a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm audio cable, and Bose notes the headphones must be powered on to use it. The box also holds a carry case, the USB-A to USB-C cable and a safety sheet. Bose lists the headphones at 7.7 x 5.5 x 2.0 inches and 0.56 lb, about 254 g.
Why black, and which generation this is
Black is the safe, discreet choice: it hides wear on the headband and cushions, looks at home in meetings and on planes, and does not show make-up or dust the way White Smoke or Sandstone can. The QuietComfort Ultra Black sold here is the first generation from 2023. Bose later released a QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) with longer battery life and USB-C audio, which we stock as a separate product. If 24 hours and the original feature set suit you, the first generation remains a strong, proven choice.
Who This Is Not For
The QuietComfort Ultra Black is not for the gym or running in the rain: Bose publishes no water or sweat resistance rating. It is not for anyone who needs the longest battery, since 18 hours with Immersive Audio on is modest. Wired listening needs the 2.5 mm cable and the headphones switched on, and there is no USB-C audio on this generation. Bose does not list LDAC, and the protein-leather cushions get warm in long sessions.
