The Bose 700 Triple Black was the headphone Bose built when it decided the QuietComfort formula had gone as far as it could. Launched in July 2019, it threw out the folding plastic frame entirely in favour of a single continuous stainless-steel headband, and replaced the old on-off noise switch with an eleven-step dial you control yourself.

700 Triple Black: Why Bose Started From a Blank Sheet

Look at the headband. It is one uninterrupted piece of stainless steel that slides through the earcups rather than hinging into them, which is why there is no visible adjustment ratchet and no fold-flat joint. Bose gave up portability to get there, and in exchange the frame has almost nothing on it that can snap.

The earcups are angled rather than flat, so they sit against the side of your head at the angle your ears actually are. Combined with synthetic protein leather pads, that is what makes six-hour listening sessions realistic rather than theoretical.

Bose 700 Triple Black: Eleven Levels, Not One Switch

Most noise cancelling headphones give you on, off, and maybe a transparency mode. This gives you a scale from 0 to 10. Zero is full transparency, where the outside world comes through almost untouched. Ten is near silence. Everything between is usable, and you will find yourself living at 5 or 6 in a coffee shop and pushing to 10 on a flight.

Six microphones handle the cancellation itself — four mounted outside the earcups and two inside. The outer pair samples the environment, the inner pair measures what actually reached your ear, and the system corrects the difference in real time. There is also a dedicated Conversation Mode: hold the button for a second and the music pauses while transparency jumps to maximum, so you can talk to a flight attendant without taking anything off.

700 Triple Black: The Microphone System Is the Story

Bose separated the two jobs. Noise cancellation uses its own six microphones. Your voice is captured by a different adaptive four-microphone array that isolates speech from wind and background noise before it ever reaches the other end of the call.

This is the single feature that made the 700 a work headphone rather than a travel headphone, and it is why the model stayed on sale for years after launch while newer designs came and went. If you take calls in cafes, airports or open-plan offices, this is where the money goes.

700 Triple Black: Who Triple Black Suits

Triple Black is the version that disappears. The finish is matte across the earcups and the steel headband is blackened to match, so nothing catches the light and nothing reads as a fashion statement in a meeting or on camera. It is the safer of the two finishes for anyone using these primarily for work.

Practically, the matte surface hides scuffs better than a light finish, but it does show fingerprints on the touch panel more visibly. A quick wipe with a dry microfibre cloth clears it. 700 Triple Black: Touch Controls and Battery

The front half of the right earcup is a touch surface. Slide up and down for volume, forward and back for tracks, double tap to play, pause, answer or hang up. There is no wheel and no cluster of buttons to memorise in the dark.

Battery is rated at up to 20 hours of wireless playback with noise cancelling running. Does the matte black finish show fingerprints?

On the touch panel, yes, more than a lighter finish does. The rest of the matte surface hides marks and scuffs well. A dry microfibre cloth handles it in seconds.

Do these fold up?

The earcups rotate flat but the headband does not fold. That is the trade-off for the single-piece steel frame. The supplied hard case is shaped to match.

Can I use them wired?
