Noise cancelling and Transparency
The Beats Studio Buds have two listening modes plus an off setting. Active Noise Cancelling uses microphones on each earbud to reduce the steady noise around you: a bus engine, an open office or an air-conditioning vent. Transparency does the opposite and lets outside sound in, so you can hear a gate announcement or a colleague without taking the earbuds out. Beats says each earbud has two microphones dedicated to ANC and one dedicated to voice pickup on calls. A long press on either earbud switches modes, or it can be set to call up your voice assistant instead. Turning both modes off gives the longest battery life.
Battery: 8 hours per charge, 24 with the case
Beats quotes two sets of numbers, and the difference is noise cancelling. With ANC off, the Beats Studio Buds give up to 8 hours of listening per charge, and the case adds two more charges for a combined total of up to 24 hours. With ANC on, the figures drop to up to 5 hours from the earbuds and up to 15 hours in total with the case. In practice that is a working day of music with ANC off, or a long flight segment with ANC on before the buds go back in the case. The case charges over USB-C, a USB-C cable is included, and no power adapter is in the box.
iPhone and Android, both supported natively
The Beats Studio Buds were designed to work equally well with Apple and Android phones. On an iPhone, open the case next to your unlocked phone and a one-touch pairing card appears. On Android, Google Fast Pair shows a similar one-tap prompt, and the Beats app handles settings and firmware updates. Apple owners also get hands-free Siri and Find My, which shows the last known location of lost earbuds. You can pair them manually with a Mac, a Windows laptop or a tablet by holding the button on the case until the light blinks.
Controls, fit and IPX4
Controls are physical buttons rather than touch panels, which makes them easier to use with sweaty fingers or gloves. Press once to play or pause, twice to skip forward and three times to go back a track. You can wear either Beats Studio Buds earbud on its own, which is handy for calls while driving. The earbuds are rated IPX4, which Beats describes as resistant to sweat and water splashing from any direction; the charging case is not water resistant, so keep it dry. Several ear tip sizes are included, and a good seal is what lets ANC work properly.
Beats Studio Buds vs Beats Studio Buds +
Beats has replaced the Beats Studio Buds with the Studio Buds + on its own store. According to Beats, the Studio Buds + offer up to 1.6 times more noise cancelling, up to 36 hours of total listening with the case (ANC off), larger microphones and extra vents for comfort. The original Beats Studio Buds still offer the core package at a lower price: ANC, Transparency, IPX4, one-touch pairing on both platforms and Find My. If you mainly want a compact pair for commuting and calls and do not need the longest battery life, the original model is the value choice.
Who This Is Not For
If battery life is your top priority, look elsewhere: 5 hours per charge with ANC on is modest by current standards, and the Studio Buds + or other newer earbuds last longer. Beats no longer lists the Bluetooth version, driver size, earbud weight or a Fast Fuel figure for the original Beats Studio Buds on its current website, so none of those are quoted here. Beats’ support information does not mention wireless charging, the case has no water rating, and no power adapter is included. As a white product, the case shows marks from pockets and bags sooner than a dark colour would.
