Processor, memory and storage
ASUS lists the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with 8 cores and 16 threads, a 2.0GHz base clock, boost up to 5.0GHz and 24MB of cache, plus an AMD XDNA NPU rated up to 50 TOPS and AMD Radeon graphics. Memory is 24GB of LPDDR5X in dual channel, soldered to the board, so it cannot be upgraded later; that is why the 24GB figure matters, since the integrated graphics share it. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD in the full M.2 2280 size, and a UHS-II microSD reader adds room for more games. ASUS notes that actual SSD speed varies with the CPU.
The 7-inch 120Hz display
The screen on the ROG Xbox Ally X is a 7-inch IPS-level panel at 1920 × 1080 with a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium, which smooths out frame-rate dips in demanding games. ASUS quotes 500 nits of brightness, 100% sRGB and 75.35% Adobe RGB coverage, an anti-glare low-reflection finish, and 10-point touch. The glass is Gorilla Glass Victus with Gorilla Glass DXC on top. It is not OLED, so blacks are not as deep as on an OLED handheld, but the anti-glare coating helps when you play near a window or outdoors in shade.
Controls and the Xbox layer
The grips on the ROG Xbox Ally X hold two full-size analog sticks, a D-pad, A B X Y buttons, L and R bumpers and Hall Effect analog triggers, plus two assignable grip buttons on the back. HD haptics and a 6-axis gyro are built in. ASUS lists View and Menu buttons alongside a Command Center button and an Armoury Crate button. ASUS also lists 2 months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with this model, but only in markets where the offer applies and subject to its terms, so treat it as a possible extra rather than part of the price.
Battery, charging and ports
The battery is 80Wh, a 4-cell Li-ion pack. ASUS lists a 65W USB-C adapter (20V, 3.25A, 100–240V input) for this model, and states that whether the charger is in the box varies by country, region and model. On top are two USB-C ports: one USB4 port that is Thunderbolt 4 compliant, with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort and power delivery. That means you can charge from one and connect a monitor or dock to the other. There is also a 3.5mm combo audio jack, and wireless is Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.4.
Size, sound and security
ASUS gives the weight of the ROG Xbox Ally X as 715 g and the size as 29.0 × 12.1 × 2.75 to 5.09 cm, the thicker figure being the grips. Sound comes from two speakers with Smart Amp and Dolby Atmos, headphone output is Hi-Res certified, and a built-in array microphone uses AI noise cancelling for voice chat. A fingerprint sensor handles Windows sign-in, and the Microsoft Pluton security processor is built in. ASUS lists 5 years of security update support for this product, until 31 December 2030.
Who This Is Not For
The ROG Xbox Ally X is not for anyone who wants a plug-and-play console: it is a Windows PC, so you will deal with Windows updates, drivers and several game launchers. At 715 g it is heavy for long sessions held in the hands without resting your arms. The screen is IPS-level, not OLED. The memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded. And the Game Pass offer and the charger in the box both depend on region, so do not count on either.
