Description

An Arabic layout is the whole point of this one. Apple prints its keyboards in a long list of layouts, and the Arabic version of the Magic Keyboard is the one that stops you hunting for letters that are not written on the keys. What you have to get right before buying is fit, because Apple builds this unit for the iPad Pro 11-inch and the compatibility list is only two models long.

Why the Arabic Layout Is the Reason to Buy This One

Apple sells the Magic Keyboard in a dedicated Arabic layout, and that is a hardware decision rather than a setting. iPadOS will happily switch input languages on any keyboard, but the letters are printed at the factory: an Arabic layout has the Arabic character set on the keycaps, and a US English one does not. If most of your writing is in Arabic, that difference is the difference between reading the keys and remembering them.

One honest caveat. Apple does not publish a keycap-by-keycap description of its Arabic layout, so we are not going to tell you exactly how the Latin characters are marked alongside the Arabic ones. What Apple does confirm is that the keys are backlit, which is what keeps either script legible in a dim room.

Exactly Which iPads the iPad Pro 11-inch Magic Keyboard Fits

Apple’s compatibility list for this keyboard has two entries on it and no more: iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) and iPad Pro 11-inch (M4). Apple currently sells the keyboard under the M5 name with the part number unchanged, so an M4 owner is buying the correct accessory even if the packaging reads M5.

It does not fit the iPad Pro 13-inch, in either the M4 or the M5 generation. The 13-inch keyboard is a physically different size and the two are not interchangeable in either direction. It does not fit the iPad Air 11-inch or the iPad Air 13-inch either; Apple sells a separate Magic Keyboard designed for iPad Air, and an Air needs that one. It does not fit the standard iPad, the iPad mini, or the iPad Pro 11-inch models from before the M4 generation. There is a software requirement too: Apple states iPadOS 17.4 or later.

What Apple Publishes About the Hardware

Four published details define this generation. The function row has 14 keys and covers screen brightness, volume and other controls without reaching for the screen. The trackpad is a built-in larger glass trackpad with haptic feedback, designed for Multi-Touch gestures and the cursor in iPadOS. The keys are backlit and sit on a scissor mechanism with 1 mm of travel, which is how far a key moves before it stops, not a thickness measurement. And the palm rest is aluminium.

The hinge is machined aluminium and carries a USB-C connector for pass-through charging, so the cable plugs into the keyboard and the port on the iPad Pro 11-inch stays free for a drive or a display. Attachment is magnetic: Apple’s wording is that these keyboards attach to iPad magnetically with no need for switches, plugs, and pairing, so there is no Bluetooth setup and nothing to re-pair after a restart. The cantilever stand adjusts the viewing angle, and the whole thing folds into a case that protects the front and the back in a bag.

Black, and the Part Number Worth Checking

This is the black finish, Apple part number MWR23AB/A. Apple lists the same Arabic keyboard in white as MWR03AB/A, and both are the identical keyboard with an identical specification: same 14-key row, same trackpad, same 1 mm keys, same compatibility. Colour is the only difference, so pick on looks and on how visibly a light deck shows use.

If you are cross-checking with Apple before you order, that part number is the fastest way to be certain you are looking at the Arabic layout for the iPad Pro 11-inch rather than an English layout or a 13-inch unit.

Who This Is Not For

It is not for anyone whose tablet is not an iPad Pro 11-inch from the M4 or M5 generation. That rules out every iPad Air, the standard iPad, the iPad mini, the iPad Pro 13-inch, and any 11-inch iPad Pro older than the M4. A keyboard that does not physically fit is not worth buying at a discount.

It is not for someone who types mainly in English and wants the familiar US English keycaps, and it is not for anyone who cannot get their iPad past iPadOS 17.4. It is also a poor fit if what you actually want is a cheap protective cover: this is a full keyboard and trackpad, and a plain folio costs a small fraction of it. Finally, Apple publishes no weight or dimensions for this accessory, so if you are counting grams for a travel bag, you are going in without a figure.

FAQ

Does this keyboard fit the iPad Pro 13-inch?

No. Apple lists it for the iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) and the iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) only. The 13-inch iPad Pro needs the 13-inch keyboard, and neither size fits the other.

Will it work with an iPad Air 11-inch?

No. There is no iPad Air on Apple’s compatibility list for this keyboard. Apple sells a separate Magic Keyboard built for iPad Air, and that is what an Air needs.

How many keys are in the function row?

14. Apple describes it as a 14-key function row for quick access to screen brightness, volume controls and other features.

Does it need a particular version of iPadOS?

Yes, iPadOS 17.4 or later. Apple states this as a system requirement, so update the iPad Pro 11-inch first if it is running anything older.

Is the white version a different keyboard?

No. MWR03AB/A in white and MWR23AB/A in black are the same Arabic keyboard with the same published specification and the same compatibility. Only the finish changes.

Can I charge the iPad while it is attached?

Yes. The machined aluminium hinge carries a USB-C connector for pass-through charging, which leaves the iPad’s own USB-C port free.

How much does it weigh?

Apple does not publish a weight or any dimensions for this Magic Keyboard, so we cannot quote one. Any figure you find elsewhere did not come from Apple.

What warranty and returns apply?

1 year of warranty from Totot against manufacturing defects, plus 14 days to return an item that arrives defective or does not match the order.
