This is the model with the standard charging case, which charges over USB-C only. AirPods 5 standard case or Wireless Charging Case?
Apple sells two AirPods 5 models, and the difference is the case plus two small extras. The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case charges on Qi pads and the Apple Watch charger, has a speaker in the case for Find My, adds volume swipe on the stems and gives one more hour per charge with ANC on. The standard AirPods 5 case charges by USB-C only, has no speaker, and the stems use press controls.
Both cases measure 46.2 x 50.1 x 21.2 mm; the standard one weighs 32.3 g. If you already charge your phone with a USB-C cable every night and do not own a charging pad, the standard AirPods 5 give you the same listening experience for less.
Noise cancellation with an open fit
Most noise-cancelling earbuds rely on silicone tips to seal the ear. AirPods 5 sit in the ear like classic AirPods and use a new multiport acoustic architecture, the H2 chip and an inward-facing microphone to cancel sound that leaks past the open fit. Apple calls it best-in-class open-ear ANC. It will not match the sealed silence of tip-based earbuds, but for people who find tips uncomfortable it is a real step.
Transparency lets the outside in, Adaptive Audio blends Transparency and ANC depending on your surroundings, and Conversation Awareness lowers your media when you start speaking to someone.
Battery life, with Apple’s test conditions
Apple rates the standard AirPods 5 at up to 4 hours of listening per charge with Active Noise Cancellation on, up to 6 hours with noise control off, and up to 20 hours in total with the case with ANC on. Five minutes in the case gives around 1 hour of listening.
Apple tested in July and August 2026 with pre-production units at 50% volume, with Spatial Audio and Conversation Awareness off and noise control set to ANC. Higher volume and Spatial Audio will shorten these numbers.
Sound, microphones and controls
A custom high-excursion Apple driver and a custom high dynamic range amplifier produce the sound, with Adaptive EQ and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Voice Isolation keeps your voice clear on calls, and Apple lists studio-quality audio recording. Sensors include dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, an optical in-ear sensor, motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers and a force sensor.
On this model the force sensor works by pressing: press once to play, pause or answer, twice to skip forward or end a call, three times to skip back, and press and hold to switch listening modes. You can also say “Siri” or “Hey Siri”, and Apple says you can respond to Siri with a nod or shake of the head.
Live Translation and compatibility
AirPods 5 support Live Translation for conversations across languages. Apple’s conditions: a compatible Apple device on the latest software, AirPods on the latest firmware and Apple Intelligence turned on, and the feature is not available in all languages or regions. The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.3.
With an Android phone or older software, AirPods 5 work as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple notes functionality may be limited, so most of the smart features above will not be available.
Size, weight, durability and what is in the box
Each earbud measures 30.2 x 18.3 x 18.1 mm and weighs 4.3 g. Apple rates AirPods 5 IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance, intended for non-water sports and exercise. Accessibility features include Live Listen, headphone levels and Headphone Accommodations.

Who This Is Not For
Anyone who wants the strongest noise cancelling: a sealed, tip-based earbud still blocks more. Owners of a Qi pad or Apple Watch charger who want to drop their AirPods on it, since this case does not charge wirelessly. People who often misplace the case, because only the Wireless Charging Case has a speaker for Find My. Android users, who lose most of the features. And swimmers: IP57 is not a swimming rating.
