A Monster’s Expedition + Earlier Adventures – Nintendo Switch (4 Puzzle Games on One Cartridge, Draknek & Friends, ESRB E)

A Monster’s Expedition + Earlier Adventures is the physical Nintendo Switch collection from the puzzle studio Draknek & Friends. As the yellow badge on the cover says, it includes four games on one cartridge: the open-world puzzler A Monster’s Expedition, plus the Earlier Adventures trio of Cosmic Express, A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build and Sokobond. The copy we stock is the North American retail edition with an ESRB E rating on the front.

Four Games in A Monster’s Expedition + Earlier Adventures

The collection bundles A Monster’s Expedition with three older Draknek & Friends titles. The publisher’s physical-edition partner iam8bit describes the package as four award-winning puzzle games on one cartridge with over 100 hours of unique, no-filler puzzles. Nothing has to be downloaded to start any of the four games.

The four titles are: A Monster’s Expedition, the headline game; Cosmic Express, which Draknek describes as a puzzle game about planning the train route for the world’s most awkward space colony; Sokobond, described by Draknek as an elegantly designed puzzle game about chemistry, with over 100 levels and no chemistry knowledge required; and A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, Draknek’s snowman-building puzzle game.

A Monster’s Expedition: Push Trees, Cross Islands

On Nintendo’s official listing, A Monster’s Expedition is called an adorable and relaxing open world puzzle adventure for monsters who love to learn about humans. You push trees over to create pathways between islands, and on those islands you find exhibits about human history, presented from a monster’s puzzled point of view.

Nintendo’s description stresses simple but deep mechanics packed with possibilities, and a world of hundreds of islands that you explore at your own pace without being forced into one solution. iam8bit calls the central log-rolling mechanic one with escalating complexities, which is a fair warning: the early islands are gentle, the later ones are not.

The Earlier Adventures: Cosmic Express, Sokobond and Snowman

The three Earlier Adventures games each have their own rule set, which keeps the cartridge from feeling like one long game. In Cosmic Express the job, in Draknek’s words, is planning the train route for the world’s most awkward space colony. Sokobond is a chemistry puzzle that Draknek calls logical, minimalist and beautiful, and it promises that no chemistry knowledge is required. A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is the studio’s snowman-building puzzle game, and its title tells you the goal.

Because the Earlier Adventures titles are self-contained, you can switch between them whenever one puzzle refuses to give. That variety is the strongest argument for this box over buying A Monster’s Expedition on its own, and it is why iam8bit can count more than 100 hours of puzzles across the four games.

Earlier Adventures on Switch: Players, Languages and Region

Every game in A Monster’s Expedition + Earlier Adventures is single-player. Nintendo lists the standalone A Monster’s Expedition with TV, tabletop and handheld modes, one player, and text in Japanese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Korean and Chinese. Draknek does not publish a separate language list for the physical collection, and Arabic is not among the languages on Nintendo’s listing.

The box is the North American release, rated ESRB E. Nintendo’s own support FAQ says Switch software from other regions works on Switch consoles, although Nintendo has not tested every title on every region’s console and recommends region-matched software; consoles and games from mainland China are the exception.

Who This Is Not For

A Monster’s Expedition + Earlier Adventures is not for players who want action, a story-heavy game or local multiplayer: these are quiet, single-player logic puzzles, and some of the later ones can stall you for a long time. There is no Arabic text, though the puzzles themselves rely very little on reading. Collectors should also note that this is the standard retail box; the iam8bit store version added a poster and an alternate cover sheet that are not part of this edition.
