Why ping spikes and how to bring it down step by step, with before-and-after numbers and real player fixes.

There is a big difference between lag caused by your PC and lag caused by your connection. If enemies teleport, your shots don’t register, or you snap backwards (rubber-banding), the problem is usually the network. In this guide we measure the problem first, then fix it in order from easiest to hardest.
60 → 16 msWi-Fi vs Ethernet ping in a How-To Geek test
+47 → +3 msExtra latency while downloading, before and after SQM
First figure out where the problem is, because each has a different fix. Even Riot separates its Low Client FPS warning from its Network Problem warning in Valorant:
❌ Myth🖥 PC lag (low FPS): the picture itself stutters and feels heavy, even when you just turn the camera. The fix is settings and hardware.
✅ Reality🌐 Network lag (high ping): the image is smooth but players teleport, shots register late, and you snap back. The fix is your network — the subject of this guide.
⏱PingThe time in milliseconds for data to reach the server and come back. Lower is better.
〰JitterHow much your ping varies moment to moment. A stable 40 beats a ping bouncing between 20 and 100.
📦Packet lossThe share of packets lost on the way. Riot says it should be near zero at all times.
📈BufferbloatDelay caused when the router buffers too much data at once, e.g. when someone at home is downloading.
How to Measure the Problem
The easiest way is inside the game itself:
🎯ValorantSettings → Video → Stats for ping and packet-loss graphs, and Settings → General → Instability Indicators for warning icons.
💣CS2Settings → Game → Telemetry → Show ping = Always.
🏝FortniteSettings → Game UI → HUD → Net Debug Stats.
🪂WarzoneSettings → Interface → Telemetry → Server Latency and Packet Loss.
In Windows you can run a quick test: press Win+R, type cmd, then:
Command Prompt
C:> ping 8.8.8.8 -n 10Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=117Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=117Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=142ms TTL=117Request timed out.Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=117Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 9, Lost = 1 (10% loss)Minimum = 18ms, Maximum = 142ms, Average = 33ms
📷 Example illustration: the red lines are what you’re looking for — ping spikes (jitter) and lost replies (packet loss).
Bufferbloat test: Open the Waveform test and check the grade (A to F). If latency rises a lot while downloading, the problem is your router, not the game.
1. Ethernet Instead of Wi-Fi
The biggest difference from a single step. Look at the numbers:
🧪 Real testWi-Fi 6 vs Cat6 Ethernet
Wi-Fi 6 ping
60 ms
Ethernet ping
16 ms
Wi-Fi 6 jitter
20 ms
Ethernet jitter
7 ms
Ping dropped to under a quarter
Source: How-To Geek — average of 4 tests each. Results vary with your home and router.
Router far away? A long Cat6 cable or a Powerline adapter usually fixes it better than any Wi-Fi extender.
2. If You Must Use Wi-Fi
Make sure you’re on 5GHz or 6GHz, not 2.4GHz, because they’re less congested. According to Microsoft, Wi-Fi 6E adds the less crowded 6GHz band. Check which band you’re on here:
Turn off adapter power savingOpen Device Manager → Network adapters → right-click your Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Ping spikes every few seconds?Windows scans for Wi-Fi networks automatically, which can cause spikes. The command netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface=”Wi-Fi” stops it (see player experiences below).
Turn it back on after gamingRevert with netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=yes interface=”Wi-Fi”, because while it’s off your PC won’t auto-connect to networks.
3. Stop Background Downloads
Windows updates, Steam and streaming on another device all raise your ping noticeably. Start by turning off update sharing with other devices:

Turn this off ✕
Allow downloads from other devicesShare updates with other PCs
🎮SteamIn Settings → Downloads, stop downloads during gameplay, or pause them manually.
📺Other devices at home4K streaming on the TV or downloads on a phone affect your ping if the router has no QoS.
📶Metered connectionMakes Windows download only important updates, per Microsoft.
4. Bufferbloat and Your Router
If your ping is great when the house is quiet but spikes when someone downloads, that’s bufferbloat. The fix is SQM or QoS on your router (not every router has it):
🧪 Real testWaveform Bufferbloat test — before and after SQM
Extra latency while downloading — before
+47 ms
Extra latency while downloading — after SQM
+3 ms
Grade went from B to A+
Source: jamieede.com — idle ping stayed around 13–14 ms.
Log into your routerUsually at 192.168.1.1 or the address printed under the router.
Find QoS or SQMThe name varies by brand: QoS, Smart Queue, Adaptive QoS, or Game Boost.
Enable it and retestCompare your Waveform grade before and after. You may need to lower the speed limit a little for the best result.
5. Servers and Region
Closest server = lowest ping. Make sure the game isn’t set to Europe or India by mistake.
Important for players in the UAE and Gulf: Since early March 2026, some data centers in the region were affected, and some games temporarily shut down their local servers and moved players to more distant ones, so ping rose for many people. If your ping is high no matter what you do, check the game’s official server status first before changing anything on your PC.

Ping Myths
❌ MythChange your DNS and your ping drops.
✅ RealityDNS affects how fast websites start loading; its effect on in-game ping is tiny or unnoticeable. Source
❌ MythGaming VPNs always lower your ping.
✅ RealityIn Comparitech’s test, ping rose from about 46 to 80 ms with a VPN. Also note that VPN use in the UAE is subject to specific laws, so it’s better to work on the real fixes above.
❌ MythA faster plan (more Mbps) = lower ping.
✅ RealitySpeed isn’t ping. Games use little data; what matters is the cable, the router and the distance to the server.

His Wi-Fi ping jumped from about 50 to 2,000 ms every few pings; disabling automatic scanning with netsh fixed it instantly.
A USB Wi-Fi adapter spiked to over 2,000 ms every 10–20 seconds; the accepted fix was the same netsh command, and another user also benefited from disabling power saving.
Clean junk files, disable startup bloat, switch to the best power plan, and watch CPU/GPU temperatures in real time — all from one simple Windows tool.
Lag can come from your PC (low FPS, stuttering picture) or from the connection (players teleport, shots register late). High ping is the second type, and it’s fixed on the network, not with graphics settings.
What is a good ping for gaming?
Under 30–40 ms is excellent for competitive games, and what matters most is that it’s stable (low jitter) with no packet loss.
Is Ethernet really better than Wi-Fi?
Yes. In How-To Geek’s test, Wi-Fi 6 averaged 60 ms with 20 ms jitter, while Ethernet averaged 16 ms with 7 ms jitter.
Does changing DNS lower ping?
Its effect on in-game ping is tiny or unnoticeable, because DNS is only used when the connection starts, not during play.
