The Shokz OpenDots Air Purple is the Daybreak Purple version of OpenDots Air, the lighter clip-on model in the Shokz open-ear range. Instead of sitting inside the ear canal, each earbud clips around the edge of the ear, leaving the ear open so you still hear traffic, colleagues and announcements. Shokz pairs Bassphere audio with DirectPitch, which aims sound towards the ear and limits leakage. Each earbud weighs 6.3 g, battery life is up to 9 hours per charge and up to 36 hours with the case under Shokz test conditions, and the earbuds are rated IP55. The soft, muted purple is a colour that reads as an accessory, almost like ear jewellery, rather than a piece of tech.

Daybreak Purple: a clip that looks like an accessory
Clip-on earbuds sit on the visible part of the ear, so the colour matters more than with in-ear buds hidden inside the ear. The Shokz OpenDots Air Purple uses a very pale, lilac-toned purple that Shokz calls Daybreak Purple. It works well with silver jewellery, light hijabs and pastel or neutral outfits, and it looks deliberate rather than technical in an office or at a café. Compared with the Black version, the Shokz OpenDots Air Purple is more visible and more personal; if you want the earbuds to blend in completely, black is the quieter choice. Because the shade is light, makeup or sunscreen marks can show over time, but the smooth finish wipes clean with a soft, dry cloth.

Bassphere and DirectPitch sound
Open-ear designs usually struggle with bass because there is no seal. Shokz uses its Bassphere technology on the Shokz OpenDots Air Purple to give a fuller low end than a simple open speaker, while DirectPitch shapes the sound towards the ear canal to reduce what people around you hear at moderate volume. The Shokz app offers four preset EQ modes, namely Standard, Vocal, Bass and Private, plus custom profiles. Private mode is useful in a quiet office or on public transport. Shokz does not publish the driver size, frequency response or Bluetooth version for OpenDots Air, so we do not list figures for them.

Battery life and charging
Shokz rates the Shokz OpenDots Air Purple at up to 9 hours of listening on a single charge and up to 36 hours in total with the charging case, under ideal conditions; volume, settings and environment change the real figure. A 10-minute charge gives about 2 hours of playback. The earbuds take about 1 hour to charge fully, and the case about 2 hours over USB-C. The Shokz OpenDots Air Purple does not support wireless charging, and a USB-C cable is not included in the box, so you will use one you already own.

Calls, controls and pairing
Each Shokz OpenDots Air Purple earbud has dual AI noise-cancelling microphones that separate your voice from the noise around you during calls. Controls use a force sensor: tap or pinch to play and pause, change volume, skip tracks or call up the voice assistant, and the gestures can be customised in the Shokz app. There is no left or right earbud, so either one fits either ear, and you can use a single earbud on its own. Opening the case puts the earbuds into pairing mode on first use. Google Fast Pair works on Android 11 or later, Microsoft Swift Pair on Windows 10 or later, and multipoint and Smart Wear Detection are switched on through the app.
Fit, sweat and daily use
The clip grips the outer rim of the ear in a universal size, so there are no ear tips to choose and nothing presses inside the ear canal. That makes the Shokz OpenDots Air Purple comfortable for long office days and for people who find in-ear buds tiring. The IP55 rating covers sweat and light rain on the earbuds; the charging case is not water resistant, so keep it in a bag at the gym. Because the clip sits away from the top of the ear, it generally shares space well with glasses arms.
Who This Is Not For
The Shokz OpenDots Air Purple is not for anyone who wants noise cancellation: it has no ANC, and being open-ear, it will not block out a plane cabin or a loud metro. It does not support wireless charging, and no USB-C cable comes in the box. The case is not water resistant. Bass is good for an open design but will not match a sealed in-ear earbud, and at high volume people nearby may hear some sound. Shokz rates it IP55, not for swimming. If you want IP57, wireless charging and Dolby Audio, look at OpenDots ONE or OpenDots 2 instead.
