The Shokz OpenDots Air Black are the lightest, most stripped-back clip-on earbuds in the Shokz range, announced on 4 June 2026 alongside the OpenDots 2. Each bud weighs 6.3 g and clips around the edge of the ear, leaving the ear canal open. Shokz keeps its Bassphere sound, dual AI microphones per earbud and IP55 earbuds, rates the battery at up to 9 hours per charge and 36 hours with the case, and leaves out Dolby Audio and wireless charging. Here is what you get, what you give up, and what an open design means day to day.

Where the Shokz OpenDots Air sits in the clip-on range
Shokz positions the Shokz OpenDots Air as the standard, more affordable clip-on. Compared with the Shokz OpenDots 2 Black, Shokz says the Air leaves out Bassphere 2.0, MirrorPitch, the bone conduction call microphone, wireless charging and Dolby Audio, and it has 36 hours of total battery instead of 40 and IP55 instead of IP57.
What it adds is Bluetooth 6.1 and the lowest weight of the three. Against the older Shokz OpenDots ONE Black, the Air is lighter per bud (6.3 g against 6.5 g) and carries the higher water rating (IP55 against IP54), but gives up the ONE’s Dolby Audio and Qi charging.
Bassphere sound with DirectPitch
The Shokz OpenDots Air uses Shokz’s original Bassphere system to give an open earbud more low end than its size suggests, with DirectPitch steering sound toward the ear to reduce leakage. Shokz Australia lists a frequency response of 100 Hz to 20 kHz, so the deepest sub-bass is outside what Shokz claims for this model.
EQ and control customisation live in the Shokz App. There is no Dolby Audio on this model.
Weight, fit and the Classic Black finish
At 6.3 g ± 0.2 g per bud and 37.3 g ± 2 g for the case (49.9 g together), the Shokz OpenDots Air is built for people who forget they are wearing earbuds. The clip grips the outer ear without pressing into the canal, and Dynamic Ear Detection handles which ear each bud is on.
Shokz calls this colour Classic Black, with a metallic finish; it is the understated choice next to the pearlescent Daybreak Purple and goes with anything from gym wear to office clothes.
Battery and charging, with one catch
Shokz rates the Shokz OpenDots Air at up to 9 hours of music per charge and 36 hours with the case under ideal conditions, or 8 hours of calls per charge and 32 hours with the case. A 10-minute quick charge gives 2 hours of music. The earbuds take about 1 hour to charge, and an empty case about 120 minutes over USB-C.
The catch: there is no wireless charging, and Shokz states the box does not include a USB-C charging cable. Most homes already have one, but check before you travel. Standby reaches up to 180 days.
Calls, controls and pairing
Each bud carries two air-conduction microphones with AI noise cancelling and adaptive beamforming for calls. Controls combine taps with pinch gestures read by a force sensor, customisable in the app.
Bluetooth 6.1 with a 10 m range, MultiPoint for two devices, Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair. Shokz does not publish codec support for the Shokz OpenDots Air.
Sound leakage and awareness
The open design keeps you aware of traffic and people around you, but it also lets some sound out. DirectPitch reduces leakage without eliminating it; at high volume in a quiet room, someone close by may hear your music. There is no isolation and no ANC, so noisy environments mean turning the volume up.
Who This Is Not For
Anyone who wants wireless charging or Dolby Audio: step up to the OpenDots ONE or OpenDots 2. Commuters and flyers who want quiet, since there is no ANC or isolation. Bass-focused listeners, given the 100 Hz lower limit Shokz lists.
Swimmers: IP55 covers sweat and rain, not submersion, and the charging case is not waterproof. And if you have no spare USB-C cable, budget for one, because none is included.
