Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is the new start for NetherRealm Studios’ fighting series, published by Warner Bros. Games and released on 19 September 2023. Instead of continuing the old story, the game opens a new era: Liu Kang, now the Fire God, has shaped a fresh timeline, and familiar fighters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kitana and Johnny Cage return with new relationships and new backstories. On top of the main roster sits a second roster of Kameo Fighters you call in during a match. This is the PS5 disc of the Standard Edition, for one or two players offline, with online play through PlayStation Plus.

A new era of Kombat
Warner Bros. Games describes the setting as a reborn Mortal Kombat universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang. That idea lets NetherRealm keep the famous names while changing who they are: alliances shift, old rivals start in new places, and the story does not require you to know the earlier games. For newcomers, Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is therefore a clean entry point into the series; for long-time fans it is a chance to see the characters rewritten. The cast announced at launch included Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kitana, Johnny Cage and Shang Tsung, with Nitara voiced by Megan Fox.

Kameo Fighters
The headline system in Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is the Kameo Fighter. Before each match you pick your main fighter and a Kameo from a separate roster of support characters drawn from more than 30 years of series history. During the fight you summon the Kameo to extend a combo, break pressure or add an attack your main fighter does not have. PlayStation’s store page calls it a system that lets you summon a wealth of fearsome fighters to assist you. In practice it doubles your choices: every main fighter plays differently with each Kameo, so finding a pairing that suits you is a large part of learning the game.
Story mode and Invasions
NetherRealm is known for full cinematic story campaigns, and Warner Bros. Games calls this one a fresh cinematic narrative. You play chapters as different fighters while the story moves between cutscenes and fights. Invasions is the newer mode: a progression mode where you travel across the realms on an interactive map, take on challenges and earn rewards, organised in seasons that Warner Bros. Games said would change on a six-week schedule. Together the two modes give Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 plenty to do for a player who mostly plays alone and never goes online.
Fatalities and the 18 rating
Fatalities return, and PlayStation describes them as grislier and more inventive than ever before. They are the reason the game carries an 18 age rating on the PlayStation Store in the UAE. The violence is graphic and close-up, so Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is not a game for children or for a shared family console without parental controls. Adults who enjoy the series’ style will find the finishing moves as over-the-top as ever.
Players, online and languages
According to the PlayStation Store, Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 supports one to two players offline, so two friends can fight on one console with two controllers. Online play is optional and needs a PlayStation Plus subscription. Voice languages listed by PlayStation are English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American Spanish; on-screen text adds Polish and Russian. Arabic is not listed for voice or text. PS5 game discs are not region-locked, so the disc plays on any PS5 with a disc drive and any account region.
Who This Is Not For
Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is not for children: it is rated 18 and the Fatalities are graphic. It does not include Arabic voice or text. The disc is the Standard Edition, so the Kombat Pack, Khaos Reigns expansion and later fighters are separate digital purchases. It needs a PS5 with a disc drive; the PS5 Digital Edition cannot read it without Sony’s separate disc drive. Online play requires PlayStation Plus.
