The Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor Special Edition is the green member of Microsoft’s Vapor series, announced on Xbox Wire on 2 April 2024 alongside the earlier Stormcloud Vapor and Dream Vapor designs. Microsoft describes it as inspired by nature at night: a strong contrast of dark and light green, swirled across the top case and the textured side grips, with rubberized green diamond-pattern grips on the back case. The swirl is produced so that each controller has its own pattern. Underneath the finish it is the current Xbox Wireless Controller, with a Share button, hybrid D-pad, Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth.

A green swirl that differs on every pad
Most Xbox colours are a single solid shade. The Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor is not: Microsoft says every colour swirl is unique, so the controller you receive will not match the product photos line for line. Expect deep forest green mixed with pale mint-like streaks, running over the face and continuing onto the side grips. The back case uses rubberized green diamond-pattern grips, a detail Microsoft highlights as a step up from the plain textured backs on standard colours. If you collect special editions, the one-off pattern is the main appeal; if you want an exact match to a photo, a solid colour is the safer choice.
Who the Nocturnal Vapor colour suits
Green has long been the Xbox brand colour, so the Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor sits naturally next to a black Xbox Series X or a Carbon Black Series S and the green Xbox logo on screen. The darker tones hide fingerprints and light dust better than white or pastel controllers, which makes it a sensible pick for a shared living-room pad that gets passed around. It also works as a second controller that is easy to tell apart from a standard black one at a glance. Players who prefer quiet, neutral colours on their desk may find the swirl too busy.
Grip, triggers and the hybrid D-pad
Xbox lists textured grip on the triggers, bumpers and back case of the current Xbox Wireless Controller, and the Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor adds rubberized diamond-pattern back grips on top of that. The hybrid D-pad combines a cross shape with a dish, which helps in fighting games and menus. The dedicated Share button in the centre captures screenshots and clips without opening the guide menu. Through the Xbox Accessories app you can remap buttons and create custom controller profiles; Microsoft notes that the app runs on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11, and the Windows app needs a compatible USB-C cable, sold separately.
Connections: Xbox, PC, phone and tablet
The Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles over Xbox Wireless, and to Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android devices over Bluetooth. Microsoft points to xbox.com/controller-compatibility for the exact supported device and operating system versions, and it works with controller-compatible games. You can pair it with several devices and switch between them. There is a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack on the bottom edge for wired headsets, useful for late-night play without disturbing anyone. A USB-C port lets you play wired, with a cable bought separately.
Power: AA batteries and up to 40 hours
Like every standard Xbox Wireless Controller, the Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor runs on AA batteries, and Microsoft quotes up to 40 hours of battery life. That figure carries a clear condition: Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with headsets, additional accessories, usage and other factors, and it was measured on pre-production units. A headset plugged into the jack shortens it. There is no built-in rechargeable battery; if you want to charge instead of swapping cells, the Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C kit is sold separately. Microsoft does not publish the weight or dimensions of this edition on its announcement page.
Who This Is Not For
The Xbox Wireless Controller Nocturnal Vapor is not for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch owners, since it is made for Xbox consoles, Windows and mobile devices. If you want a built-in rechargeable battery, back paddles or adjustable-tension sticks, look at the Elite Series 2 instead: this pad uses AA batteries and has no rear paddles. Buyers who need the exact pattern shown in photos should note that every swirl is different. And it does not work with the Xbox 360.
