The Smokin Buds True Black are Skullcandy’s everyday true wireless earbuds in their most practical colour: a charcoal-black case and buds with a small grey Skullcandy logo. Skullcandy built them around one idea, big and clean sound for a low price, and adds the basics most people need: touch controls, a mic in each earbud, three EQ modes and up to 20 hours of total battery with the case. They are rated IPX4 for sweat and splashes, and the shell is made with 50% certified recycled plastics. For the price, they are a simple, dependable pair for commutes, the gym and calls.

Why True Black is the safe pick
Black is the colour that suits everyone and everything. The Smokin Buds True Black do not draw attention in a meeting, on the metro or at the gym, and they match any phone, bag or outfit. A dark case also hides pocket marks, scuffs and fingerprints better than the lighter colours, so it still looks tidy after months in a jeans pocket. If you want one pair for every situation and do not care about making a statement, this is the colour that will age best.
Sound and EQ modes
Each earbud uses a 6 mm driver with a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz, an impedance of 16Ω and a sound pressure level of 104dB, according to Skullcandy. Skullcandy tunes the Smokin Buds True Black for a full, bass-forward sound typical of the brand. Three built-in EQ modes adjust the tuning: Music for the normal signature, Movie for more space in film and video, and Podcast to bring voices forward. There is no active noise cancelling, so the seal of the ear gel does the isolating; trying the S, M and L sizes makes a real difference to bass.
Battery life and rapid charge
Skullcandy rates the Smokin Buds True Black at up to 8 hours of playback in the earbuds and another 12 hours from the case, for up to 20 hours in total. Real figures depend on volume and EQ mode. If the battery runs out, 10 minutes in the case gives up to 2 hours of listening, enough for a commute or a workout. Skullcandy does not publish the full recharge time for the case, and the box contents it lists do not include a charging cable, so plan to use a USB-C cable you already own.
Controls, calls and everyday use
Touch controls on each bud handle play and pause, calls and your phone’s voice assistant. Each earbud has its own microphone, and you can use either bud on its own, which helps when you need to stay aware of traffic or take a call while keeping one ear free. The buds switch on and reconnect automatically when you take them out of the case. The Smokin Buds True Black work with any Bluetooth phone, tablet or laptop, Android or iPhone, with no app required for the basics.
Build, fit and sweat resistance
The Smokin Buds True Black carry an IPX4 rating, which means sweat and splashes from any direction, not immersion or swimming. Skullcandy makes the earbuds and case with 50% certified recycled plastics. Three sizes of ear gel come in the box. The case uses a flip-up lid, and reviewers on Skullcandy’s own page note that the closing mechanism feels light, so it is worth keeping it in a pocket of its own rather than loose in a heavy bag.
Who This Is Not For
The Smokin Buds True Black are not for anyone who needs active noise cancelling for flights or open-plan offices; they rely on passive isolation only. They are not swimming earbuds, since IPX4 covers sweat and splashes only. There is no wireless charging, Skullcandy does not list a charging cable in the box, and the case lid is light rather than premium. Audiophiles who want detailed, neutral sound will find the bass-forward tuning too warm.
