The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 are open-ear wireless earbuds that never go inside your ear canal. Instead, a C-shaped bridge clips onto the edge of the ear, so street, office and household sounds stay audible while you listen. This is the second generation of FreeClip, and according to HUAWEI it is lighter (5.1 g per earbud instead of 5.6 g), better protected (IP57 instead of IP54) and longer-lasting (up to 9 hours instead of 8). This version is Black, the colour that stands out least on the ear and is easiest to match with glasses and dark clothing.

C-bridge design and comfort
The bridge on the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 is made of skin-friendly liquid silicone over a shape-memory alloy that springs back after bending. One end holds the acoustic unit in front of the ear opening; the other end, the Comfort Bean, sits behind the ear and holds the earbud in place. HUAWEI says the bridge is 25% softer and the Comfort Bean 11% smaller than on the first generation, based on its lab data. Because nothing seals the ear, you avoid the pressure and blocked feeling that in-ear buds can cause over long sessions, and the ear stays open to the air the whole time.

Sound and calls
Each earbud uses a 10.8 mm dual-diaphragm driver with a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, backed by an AI NPU. HUAWEI aims sound at the ear with a reverse sound wave system that reduces how much people nearby hear, but still advises lowering the volume in quiet places. For calls, three microphones with DNN noise reduction cut background noise in busy spaces, helped by a bone-conduction voice sensor. An adaptive volume feature can raise the level on the metro or in a restaurant; it is experimental, off by default and switched on in the HUAWEI Audio Connect app.

Touch and head-gesture control
You control the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 by touch: double-tap to play or pause and to answer or end a call, triple-tap to skip to the next track, and swipe up or down to change the volume. All of these can be remapped in the app. The headline extra is head-gesture control: nod to answer a call and shake your head to decline it. It works with regular phone calls and is off by default. It is handy when your hands are busy driving, cooking or training and reaching for the earbud is awkward.

Battery and charging
HUAWEI rates the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 at up to 9 hours of music per charge and up to 38 hours with the case, measured at 50% volume over AAC. For calls the figures are up to 6 hours, or 25 hours with the case. A 10-minute charge gives about 3 hours of listening. The case recharges over USB-C in about 50 minutes, or wirelessly at up to 3 W in about 150 minutes. Each earbud has a 60 mAh battery and the case 537 mAh. No USB-C cable comes in the box, so use one you already own.
Connection and compatibility
The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 use Bluetooth 6.0 and can stay connected to two devices at once, whether iOS, Android or Windows, switching audio between them automatically. With HUAWEI phones and tablets on EMUI 10 or later, a quick-pairing pop-up appears as soon as you open the case. Other phones use the HUAWEI Audio Connect app, which needs iOS 13 or Android 8 or later and is where you set the EQ, gestures and experimental features. The Black finish hides dust and fingerprints and looks discreet on the ear compared with lighter colours.
Who This Is Not For
The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 are not for anyone who wants to block out a plane cabin or a noisy office: being open-ear, they have no active noise cancelling. Deep bass is weaker than on sealed in-ear earbuds. The IP57 rating covers the earbuds only; the case is IP54, and HUAWEI does not recommend swimming or showering with them. HUAWEI does not list LDAC or Hi-Res audio support, and no charging cable is included in the box.
