The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is AMD’s eight-core desktop processor aimed first at gaming. It runs 8 Zen 5 cores and 16 threads at a 4.7GHz base clock with boost up to 5.2GHz, but its defining feature is 96MB of L3 cache, made possible by AMD 3D V-Cache, which stacks extra cache vertically with the core die. That large cache cuts how often the processor waits on slower system memory, which is what lifts frame rates in many games. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses the AM5 socket with DDR5 memory only, carries a 120W default TDP, and comes without a cooler.

What 3D V-Cache does in games
Games request small pieces of data repeatedly and unpredictably. When the processor finds that data in its nearby cache, it does not have to wait for system memory, which is far slower. AMD gives the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 96MB of L3 cache, plus 8MB of L2 and 640KB of L1. The effect shows most in titles where the processor is the limiting part, such as competitive shooters on high refresh rate monitors. In tasks like video rendering the gain is smaller, because that work leans on core count and clock speed more than on cache size.

When the difference shows, and when it does not
The biggest gains appear at 1080p or 1440p with a strong graphics card and a high refresh rate monitor, because the processor then sets the frame rate. At 4K the graphics card does most of the work and the gap between processors narrows sharply. That makes the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D a good match for a high-end graphics card, current or planned. If you are building with a mid-range card, part of the budget may do more for you in the graphics card than in the processor.

Platform: AM5, DDR5 and PCIe 5.0
The chip needs an AM5 motherboard; AMD lists A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E chipsets. It is not compatible with AM4 boards or DDR4 memory. AMD rates dual-channel DDR5 at up to DDR5-5600 with two modules and DDR5-3600 with four, with a maximum of 256GB, and supports AMD EXPO memory profiles. The processor offers PCIe 5.0 with 24 usable native lanes, and integrated AMD Radeon Graphics with 2 graphics cores at 2200MHz, enough to drive a display or test the system before a graphics card goes in, not for gaming.

Cooling and temperature
The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D ships without a cooler, and AMD recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance. Default TDP is 120W and the maximum operating temperature AMD specifies is 95°C. A capable cooler keeps boost clocks up for longer during long gaming sessions. A large, good-quality air cooler can also work, but check case clearance and cooler height first, and apply fresh thermal paste when you install it.
Overclocking, process and OS support
The processor is unlocked, with Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer and AMD Ryzen Master support. The cores are built on TSMC 4nm FinFET and the I/O die on TSMC 6nm. AMD launched it on 7 November 2024 and lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 (64-bit), RHEL and Ubuntu as supported operating systems. Before installing it on an early AM5 motherboard, update the BIOS to a version that supports the Ryzen 9000 series; board makers publish CPU support lists for each BIOS release.
Who This Is Not For
Anyone who uses the computer mainly for office work and browsing: a cheaper processor handles that just as well. Heavy video editing and rendering workloads, where processors with more cores pull ahead. Upgraders on AM4 with DDR4, since this chip needs a new AM5 board and DDR5 memory. Buyers without a suitable cooler, as none comes in the box. And 4K gamers with a mid-range graphics card, who will see little of the cache advantage.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D FAQ
Does the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D come with a cooler?
No. No cooler is included, and AMD recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance.
Will it work on an AM4 motherboard?
No. It needs an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.
How much L3 cache does the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D have?
96MB, through AMD 3D V-Cache, plus 8MB of L2.
Does it have integrated graphics?
Yes. AMD Radeon Graphics with 2 cores, fine for display output but not for gaming.
Can it be overclocked?
Yes. It is unlocked and supports Precision Boost Overdrive and Curve Optimizer.
Will it help much at 4K?
