The Kindle 16GB Black is Amazon’s 2024 entry e-reader, listed by Amazon as Kindle (11th Generation), 2024 release. Amazon calls it the lightest and most compact Kindle, at 158 g, and gives it a 6-inch, 300 ppi glare-free display, a front light now 25% brighter at its maximum setting (as bright as Kindle Paperwhite, per Amazon), a higher contrast ratio, faster page turns and up to six weeks of reading per charge. This is the basic Kindle, not the Paperwhite. In black it is the classic, understated version: a reading tool that disappears in the hand.

Why black is the classic Kindle
A dark frame makes the page the only pale object in view, the way a printed page stands out on a dark desk. Switch on dark mode and the Kindle 16GB Black almost vanishes at night, leaving white text on black. Black also hides handling marks: an e-reader is held for hours, rested on laps and dropped into bags, and the dark shell does not show thumb marks at the edges the way a pale finish can. It suits office bags, school backpacks and anyone who wants the device to look like a book replacement rather than an accessory; the Matcha version is for those who want colour.
Reading in bed without a phone
Many buyers want one thing: to read before sleep without a phone in their hand. The Kindle lights the E Ink page from the front instead of shining a backlight at you. Turned down low with dark mode on, it is comfortable in a dark bedroom. There are no messages, email or social media, so a chapter does not turn into scrolling. Note that this model has an adjustable front light only; Amazon does not list a warm-light setting or an automatic brightness sensor for it, both of which come on Paperwhite Signature Edition models.
The 6-inch 300 ppi display
Amazon describes the screen as a 6-inch display with built-in light, 300 ppi, optimised font technology and 16 levels of grey. At that density text looks close to print, and the glare-free surface stays readable in direct UAE sunlight where a phone washes out. For 2024 Amazon raised the contrast ratio and sped up page turns. It is a greyscale screen, so comics and covers show in grey. The device measures 157.8 x 108.6 x 8.0 mm, small enough for a handbag or jacket pocket.
16 GB, battery and USB-C charging
16 GB holds thousands of books, and Amazon content also lives in free cloud storage, so titles can be removed and downloaded again at any time. Amazon rates a single charge of the Kindle 16GB Black at up to six weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off and the light at setting 13. Charging is by USB-C: about 2 hours with a 9W adapter or about 4 hours from a computer. The box has the Kindle, a USB-C cable and a Quick Start Guide; no power adapter.
Files, Wi-Fi and accessibility
Besides Kindle books (AZW3, AZW), the Kindle 16GB Black opens TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI and PRC files natively, and converts DOCX, DOC, EPUB, HTML, RTF and common images sent to it. Wi-Fi works on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. For accessibility, the VoiceView screen reader works over Bluetooth audio and reads aloud in English only, and you can invert black and white or change font size, typeface, line spacing and margins.
Who This Is Not For
The Kindle 16GB Black is not waterproof, so it is the wrong pick for the pool or the bath; that is the Paperwhite. Amazon lists no warm light, no automatic brightness and no wireless charging for it. The 6-inch screen means more page turns at large font sizes than a 7-inch Paperwhite. It does not show colour, cannot take pen notes, and the VoiceView reader speaks English only. No power adapter is included.
