The GoPro HERO10 Black is the camera that moved GoPro onto its GP2 processor, which made 5.3K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120 and 2.7K at 240 possible. It takes 23MP photos, stabilises with HyperSmooth 4.0, shows a live preview on its front screen for selfies and vlogs, and is waterproof to 10 m without a housing. Newer models have since arrived, so the GoPro HERO10 Black now makes sense for buyers who want high-frame-rate 5.3K video and GPS for less than the latest flagship.
Table of Contents
GP2 and the video modes
GoPro lists 5.3K60, 4K120 and 2.7K240 as the headline modes of the HERO10 Black, recorded as MP4 in H.264 or H.265 at up to 100 Mbps. The high frame rates are what you use for smooth slow motion: GoPro lists 8x slow motion, so a jump, a wave or a skid can be slowed right down. TimeWarp 3.0 makes stabilised hyperlapse clips while you walk or drive, and Night Lapse covers star and city-light timelapses after sunset. All of it runs on GP2, which GoPro says also makes the menus and touch screen more responsive than the previous generation.
23MP photos and frame grabs
GoPro lists a 23.6MP sensor with 23MP still photos on the GoPro HERO10 Black, and 19.6MP frame grabs pulled from 5.3K video. Frame grabs are useful for action: instead of trying to time a photo, you record the moment in 5.3K and pick the best frame later in the app. LiveBurst records 1.5 seconds before and after the shutter press and saves 12MP frames, which helps with kids, pets and sport where the right moment is hard to predict.
HyperSmooth 4.0 and horizon leveling
HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilises the image in the camera, with a Boost setting for the roughest rides. In-camera horizon leveling keeps the horizon straight when the camera tilts up to 45 degrees, which suits mountain biking on the Hatta trails, buggies in the dunes and handheld walking shots. You get footage that looks steady without needing a gimbal or editing software, and the results are visible straight away on the phone after transfer.
Front screen, GPS and wireless
The front LCD shows a live preview, so you can check framing when filming yourself, and the rear touch screen handles settings and playback. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth link the camera to the GoPro Quik app for offloading to your phone, and GPS records location data. The GoPro HERO10 Black can upload footage to the cloud automatically while charging, but that service needs a GoPro subscription. A USB-C port handles charging and wired transfers.
Water, battery and memory card
The camera is waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) with no housing, enough for swimming, snorkelling and watersports along the UAE coast. It runs on a rechargeable 1720mAh lithium-ion battery. GoPro does not publish runtime figures on the HERO10 Black product page. Footage records to a microSD card, which is required and not included; GoPro’s page names Class 10 or UHS-1 as the minimum, and a faster V30 card is the safer choice for 5.3K and 4K120.
Who This Is Not For
The GoPro HERO10 Black is not for buyers who want the newest features: it has no 8:7 sensor mode, no HDR video and no 10-bit colour, all of which arrived on later models, and HyperSmooth 4.0 is older than the 6.0 found on the HERO12 and HERO13. It is not a low-light camera. Diving deeper than 10 m needs a protective housing. GoPro does not list weight, dimensions or battery runtime on the product page, and a microSD card is not included.
