Description

The Anker PowerLine II is Anker’s durable USB-A to Lightning cable, and this is the 3ft (0.9 m) version in black, model A8432. Anker rates it to survive more than 12,000 bends, about 12 times longer than other Lightning cables by its own testing, and it carries Apple’s MFi certification, so an iPhone, iPad or AirPods case accepts it without the accessory warning that uncertified cables trigger.

Why the Anker PowerLine II Lasts

Most Lightning cables fail at the neck, where the cable meets the plug and bends every time the phone is used while charging. Anker says the PowerLine II tolerates being bent more than 12,000 times, which it puts at 12 times the life of other Lightning cables.

The outer jacket is TPE, according to Anker’s support documentation, a flexible material that stays soft and resists cracking better than the hard PVC of basic cables. The plug housings are compact, so the cable fits through most phone cases without removing them.

Apple MFi Certification

MFi (Made for iPhone, iPad, iPod) is Apple’s licensing programme for Lightning accessories. Anker states that the Anker PowerLine II is completely Apple authorised, and designed to work with iPhone, iPad, iPod and any device with a Lightning port.

In practice, MFi certification is what keeps the cable working after iOS updates. Uncertified Lightning cables often stop charging after an update or show an accessory not supported message; a certified cable does not have that problem. Anker’s support pages list a C48 Lightning connector for this cable.

Charging Speed and Data

Anker’s support FAQ gives up to 5V/2.4A, or 12W, for its USB-A to Lightning cables, including the Anker PowerLine II. That is the full speed a USB-A charger can give an iPhone, and it is the speed most older wall chargers, car chargers and laptop USB-A ports work at.

The cable also syncs data, so it connects an iPhone or iPad to a computer for backups and file transfers, and Anker confirms USB-A to Lightning cables work with Apple CarPlay in cars that have a USB-A port.

Is 3ft the Right Length?

At 0.9 m (35.4 in by Anker’s figure), this Anker PowerLine II is a desk and car length. It reaches from a laptop or wall charger to a phone lying next to it, and from a car’s USB port to a phone mount without a loop of spare cable getting in the way of the gear lever. It is short enough to coil into a bag pocket and weighs about 18 g (0.64 oz).

If you charge in bed from a socket behind the headboard, or want to use the phone on the sofa while it charges, a longer cable will be more comfortable.

Which Devices It Charges

Any Apple device with a Lightning port: iPhone 5 through iPhone 14, iPad models with Lightning, iPod touch and iPod nano, and AirPods charging cases with a Lightning port. Anker’s own compatibility list names iPhone 11, XS, XR, X, 8, 7, 6s and earlier, Lightning iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini models, and AirPods.

Black hides marks better than white on a car floor or a busy desk, which is why many buyers pick it for the car.

Who This Is Not For

iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C, not Lightning, so this cable does not fit them; the same goes for current iPad Pro, iPad Air and AirPods with USB-C cases. It also has a USB-A plug, so it will not connect to a USB-C-only charger or a recent MacBook without an adapter.

For the fast charging that iPhone 8 and later support, you need a USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C Power Delivery charger, which a USB-A cable cannot provide. No charger is included in the box, and at 0.9 m it is short for bedside use.
