The JBL Go 5 Black is the fifth generation of JBL’s smallest speaker, in the plain black finish that suits almost any bag, desk or bike mount. JBL’s official spec sheet lists a 45 mm driver with 4.8W RMS output, IP68 dust and water protection, a drop-proof build and Bluetooth 6.0. New for this generation are Auracast multi-speaker play, AirTouch stereo pairing by tapping two speakers together, and ambient edge lighting around the front.

Sound From a 45 mm Driver
Inside the JBL Go 5 Black is a single 45 mm transducer rated at 4.8W RMS. RMS is continuous power, not a peak figure, and JBL quotes a frequency response of 87 Hz to 20 kHz at -6 dB, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 85 dB. JBL describes the sound as louder and with deeper bass than before.
Set expectations by size: this is a personal speaker for a desk, a hotel room, a shower or a picnic for a few people. It will not fill a garden party. In the JBL Portable app you get a 7-band EQ to tune the sound, and the speaker supports SBC, AAC and LC3 codecs over Bluetooth 6.0.
IP68 and a Drop-Proof Build
JBL rates the JBL Go 5 Black at IP68, and the quick start guide gives the test condition as 1.5 m of water for 30 minutes. That covers a drop in the pool, beach sand and dust on a desert trip. JBL also describes the build as drop-proof.
Two cautions come from JBL’s own guide. Do not charge the speaker while it is wet; let it dry and clean the port first. And the guide lists 40 °C as the maximum operating temperature, which matters in a UAE summer: do not leave the JBL Go 5 Black on a car dashboard or in direct afternoon sun.
Auracast, AirTouch and Lossless USB-C Audio
Auracast lets you link several JBL Auracast-enabled speakers wirelessly, so a second or third speaker can join and play the same music. For a true stereo pair, bump two JBL Go 5 speakers together and AirTouch links them as left and right. JBL notes that AirTouch pairing is disabled while a multi-speaker Auracast connection is active.
The speaker also plays lossless audio over USB-C from a compatible source and content, which suits a laptop setup where Bluetooth compression is the weak link. The edge lighting is not only decoration: it gives visual cues for power, pairing, low battery and Auracast mode, and you can choose light themes in the app.
Battery and Charging
JBL lists up to 8 hours of playtime, plus up to 2 more hours with Playtime Boost, a mode you switch on in the app. JBL states playtime depends on volume level, audio content and the lighting theme, so loud music with full lighting will run shorter.
The battery is a 3.85 Wh Li-ion cell (3.85 V, 1000 mAh), and a full charge takes about 3 hours from a 5 V 1 A source. JBL advises charging the JBL Go 5 Black fully at least once every 3 months if you store it unused.
Why the JBL Go 5 Black
Black is the colour to pick if the speaker will live outdoors or in a gym bag. Sand, sunscreen marks and dust from a desert drive show far less on black fabric than on White or Pink, and the speaker still looks tidy after months of being clipped to a backpack.
It is also the colour that shows the edge lighting best. On a dark body the light bar stands out clearly in the evening, while on lighter colours it blends in more. On an office desk, the JBL Go 5 Black sits quietly next to a black laptop or monitor instead of drawing the eye.
To clean it, rinse the fabric with fresh water after the beach or pool, shake the water out, and let it dry fully before charging. JBL also sells the Go 5 in other colours, including White, Purple, Blue, Red, Pink and Squad camouflage, with identical specifications.
Who This Is Not For
Anyone who needs a cable in the box: JBL lists the JBL Go 5 Black, a quick start guide, and a warranty card and safety sheet, with no USB cable included.
Anyone who wants hands-free calls: JBL lists no microphone or speakerphone function for this model.
Anyone who needs room-filling volume: 4.8W RMS from one 45 mm driver suits personal listening, not a party.
Anyone who wants an analogue input: JBL lists no 3.5 mm aux socket, only Bluetooth and USB-C audio.
Anyone planning to leave it in hot cars or full sun: the guide gives 40 °C as the maximum operating temperature.
