Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch is a single-player narrative RPG about one nurse trying to save her husband in a small Danish village under German occupation. Developed by PortaPlay (now Bird Island) and published by DON’T NOD, it first released on Nintendo Switch and PC on 1 September 2022. This is The Resistance Edition, the special boxed release that Meridiem Games brought to European retailers in November 2023, with a specially designed sleeve, two unique art postcards and an exclusive bookmark alongside the game.

Table of Contents
The story: Tinglev, 1945
You play Gerda Larsen, a quick-thinking, observant nurse with a Danish mother and a German father, who often acts as a mediator between neighbours. Meridiem Games sets the story in February 1945, when the war is almost over. Gerda’s life in the village of Tinglev falls apart when her husband Anders is arrested by the Gestapo, and the search for him pulls her into contact with the Danish Resistance. Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch tells the war from inside one small community rather than from a battlefield, which gives every conversation real weight.

How you play
There is no combat in Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch. DON’T NOD describes the gameplay as exploration, dialogue and the management of resources and relationships. Gerda’s personality traits act as skills, the items you collect and the relationship points you earn open or close options in conversations, and a diary lets you shape her personality as the story moves on. Choices branch the story, and the game has multiple endings, so a second playthrough can go very differently depending on whom you trusted.

The people of Tinglev
Relationships matter as much as items. DON’T NOD introduces Anders, a good-natured mechanic who would rather draw local wildlife and has a principled streak; Reinhardt, a wartime officer who runs a local black market and uses drugs to cope with his guilt; and Margit, the daughter of a manufacturing magnate, who doubts her father’s dealings and dreams of leaving Tinglev. Helping one of them can cost you with another, and in Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch persuasion and timing do the work that weapons would in other games.

Art, languages and offline play
The visual style is influenced by Nordic Impressionist painting, with soft painterly textures, snowy streets and warm interiors. DON’T NOD lists English and Danish as the game’s languages, with Danish added through the day-one patch, and interface and subtitles in English, Danish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Simplified Chinese. There is no Arabic. The game is single-player only and needs no internet connection, so it plays the same on a TV, on a table or in handheld mode.

What The Resistance Edition adds
Meridiem Games announced The Resistance Edition of Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch as a special boxed release for European specialist retailers on 23 November 2023. Besides the game cartridge, the box includes a specially designed sleeve, two unique art postcards and an exclusive bookmark. The Liva’s Story DLC, released in May 2023 and sold in the Modstand Bundle on digital stores, is not mentioned in Meridiem’s announcement of this edition, so do not expect it on the cartridge. The rating is PEGI 16.
Who This Is Not For
Gerda: A Flame in Winter Switch is rated PEGI 16 for its war themes, arrests and violence, so it is not for younger children. It is single-player and built around reading and decisions, with no combat, so players who want action or multiplayer will be disappointed. There is no Arabic text or voice. The Liva’s Story DLC is not listed as part of this boxed edition.
