SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black: Sound and PositionIQ
Bose describes the SoundLink Flex as a mono speaker with surprisingly deep bass for its size. Bose does not publish a wattage or frequency-response figure, so it is best judged by what it is designed for: a table, a desk, a tent or a poolside lounger, rather than a large party.
PositionIQ detects whether the speaker is standing upright, lying flat or hanging from its utility loop, and adjusts the sound for that position automatically. You do not have to change any setting; the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black retunes itself when you move it.
SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black Battery: 12 Hours, With a Condition
Bose rates battery life at up to 12 hours, measured with Bluetooth A2DP audio at 50% volume, at 20–25°C, with the default EQ and a mix of popular tracks. The owner’s guide adds that at maximum volume you should expect up to 3 hours. Heat matters too: a speaker left in a hot car in a UAE summer will not reach the rated figure.
The SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black charges through USB-C and takes up to 4 hours with a 5 V 1.5 A supply (Bose recommends a 7.5 W adapter). The box includes a USB-C to USB-A cable but no power adapter, so use a phone charger you already own.
IP67, It Floats, and It Is Built to Be Dropped
The IP67 rating covers dust and water, and the speaker floats if it falls into a pool. Bose points out that floating does not mean it is designed for use in water, so fish it out rather than leaving it to drift. The silicone-wrapped body is built to resist drops, shocks and rust, and a nylon utility loop lets you hang it from a bag or a tent.
Bose lists the materials as aluminium, fabric, nylon, plastic, silicone and steel. At 7.93 x 3.56 x 2.06 inches (about 20.1 x 9.0 x 5.2 cm) and about 0.59 kg, the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black is small enough for the side pocket of a backpack.
aptX Adaptive, Multipoint and the Bose App
The second generation adds aptX Adaptive through Snapdragon Sound, which improves Bluetooth audio quality with compatible Android phones; iPhones connect over standard Bluetooth. Bluetooth 5.3 keeps a stable connection within about 9 m, and multipoint keeps two devices connected at once, with audio playing from one at a time.
The Bose app handles setup, an adjustable EQ, Bluetooth device management and software updates. A built-in microphone lets the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black work as a speakerphone for calls.
The Shortcut Button, Stereo and Party Mode
A programmable Shortcut button links a second Bose speaker by default, and it can be set to open your voice assistant or to use Spotify Tap instead. Two speakers of the same model play in Stereo mode, with separate left and right channels; different Bose models link in Party mode, where both play the same audio. Through SimpleSync the speaker can also join compatible Bose smart speakers and soundbars.
The second speaker does not need to match: a SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black pairs just as well with a Blue Dusk or Fog Grey unit.
Why Choose Black
Black is the safest colour for a speaker that goes everywhere. Sand, sunscreen and fingerprints show far less on a dark silicone body than on the lighter Fog Grey or Petal Pink versions, so the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen Black keeps looking clean after months in a beach bag, and it looks just as at home on an office desk. If one speaker is going to be shared by the whole family, black is the choice nobody objects to.
It is also the colour most likely to match a second Bose speaker you already own, which matters if you plan to use Stereo or Party mode on a shelf or a table.
Who This Is Not For
If you want a speaker to fill a garden party, look elsewhere: this is a mono speaker, Bose publishes no power figure, and at full volume the battery drops to around 3 hours. There is no 3.5 mm AUX input, so it cannot be wired to an older player or a TV, and no power adapter is included.
iPhone users do not get aptX Adaptive, which works with compatible Android devices, and the rated 9 m Bluetooth range is shorter than some rugged speakers advertise.
