The Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black is the all-black version of the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, which Bose announced on 10 September 2025 and put on sale on 2 October 2025. Black and White Smoke are the standard colours of this generation, and black is the one that blends into any office, airport or commute. Beyond the look, this generation adds something the first one lacked: you can plug the headphones into a laptop or phone with a USB-C cable and listen to lossless digital audio, not just charge them.

Lossless Audio over USB-C
With the included USB-C to USB-C cable, the Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black takes a digital signal straight from a laptop, tablet or compatible phone. Bose lists support for 16-bit audio at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, delivered without the compression that Bluetooth needs. In practice that is useful at a desk, where the laptop is right there, and for gaming on a computer, where a cable avoids wireless delay. The headphones can also charge while you use them over USB-C, so a long working session does not drain the battery. For older sources there is still a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm analogue cable in the box.
Bluetooth 5.4, Multipoint and aptX Adaptive
Wirelessly, the Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black uses Bluetooth 5.4 with a range of up to about 9 metres and multipoint for two devices at once, so a laptop and a phone can both stay connected. Codecs are SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive; the last works with devices that support Snapdragon Sound, and Bose points to it for lower-latency mobile gaming. An iPhone connects over AAC. Google Fast Pair speeds up the first pairing on Android, and Spotify Tap can start music from the headphones.
Why Black, and Who It Suits
Black is the practical choice for daily use. The Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black hides scuffs on the earcups and does not show the marks that hair products, make-up or sunscreen leave on lighter cushions and headbands. It looks equally at home in a formal meeting and on a long-haul flight, and it matches any laptop or phone. If you share an office with other people wearing the same headphones, black is also the least likely to look out of place. Bose highlights polished metal yokes on this generation; an occasional wipe with a soft cloth removes fingerprints.
Noise Cancelling and Listening Modes
On the Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black, CustomTune measures the sound inside your ears each time you put the headphones on and adjusts the noise cancelling and audio to fit. The modes are Quiet, Aware with ActiveSense, which Bose updated to adjust more smoothly when sudden noises occur, Immersion for spatial audio and the new Cinema mode, which makes dialogue clearer in films, podcasts and audiobooks. In the Bose app you can also turn noise cancelling fully off or set its level by hand, and build custom modes.
Battery and Standby
Bose rates the Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black at up to 30 hours of playback, about 23 hours with Immersive Audio on and up to 45 hours with noise cancelling off. A full charge takes about 3 hours, and 15 minutes gives about 3 hours of playback. The headphones start up automatically when you put them on and drop into a low-power standby when laid down or stored in the carry case, so they are ready when you next need them.
Who This Is Not For
The Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen Black has no IP rating, and Bose advises keeping it away from wet conditions, so it is not for workouts in the heat or rain. At about 264 g it is not the lightest choice for very long sessions. Wired lossless audio tops out at 16-bit and 48 kHz, the analogue jack on the earcup is 2.5 mm so you need the supplied cable, iPhone users do not get aptX Adaptive, and no power adapter is in the box.
